Writing
Writing
1. In our classroom, we use Sky, Grass, and Dirt to help children learn how to write uppercase letters and lowercase letters. We guide children to write letters on lines (or Sky, Grass, and Dirt lines), so they know where letters start, sit, and end. By practicing uppercase and lowercase letters, children learn to:
Write names properly
Form letters neatly
Read and write with confidence
2. Using tools like Sky, Grass, and Dirt writing, students remember to put an uppercase letter in the “sky” at the start of their sentence and lowercase letters in the “grass” for the rest of their words.
Phonics
1. Our class will be learning a new letter each week. Children develop the ability to pronounce speech sounds at different ages. Short vowels have one predictable spelling (with few exceptions) and are the most commonly occurring vowel sounds in English. In addition, soft C and soft G are typically introduced in late kindergarten or early first grade, depending on the phonics program.
2. Throughout the school year, our class will use a simple drill that builds automatic letter–sound recall. This practice helps strengthen both phonics skills and phonological awareness.
Our class’s typical letter–sound drill format
(As we go through our drill, we use special actions that match each letter.):
1. Letter name
2. Key picture/keyword
3. Sound
Example for Letter A 🍎:
1. Action: Pretend to take a big bite of an apple.
2. Point to the picture card and say, “a, apple, /a/.” Children echo: “a, apple, /a/.”
Daily Prayers
Each day, our class begins with simple, meaningful prayers that help children grow in faith and routine. We practice making the Sign of the Cross together, and we are still learning to distinguish our left hand from our right. We also say prayers before meals to give thanks for God’s blessings. Please continue to support your child at home as they learn to bless themselves correctly.
