Computers

You’re allowed to use the computers in the Magenta Lab whenever we’re open; even if there’s class going on. Please be respectful of other students, staff, and classes that are going on while you’re using the computers. We know that beat’s banging, but in the moment- usually only to you :)

Respect and treat these machines as you would treat actual studio equipment - they’re not some dumb terminal at the public library. A lot of work goes into making sure that these machines provide the best user experience for the user. (You!)

These machines are also shared with your fellow students so clean up after yourselves. Plug back the things you unplugged if you unplugged anything (i.e. USB cables, iloks, headphones etc...) Make sure the keyboards are plugged in. In the studio world this is called “normalling” and is basic studio etiquette.

Don’t be “that person” by leaving a mess for the next person that sits at that station. So let’s all keep the machines working for everyone.

We do not provide headphones for students. There a few you can check out from us (talk to the Studio/Night/Weekend Managers or the Student Services Coordinators) but pairs are limited so we might run out. You should bring your own headphones to class / lab / studio every time as a force of habit!

The computers get wiped clean of anything saved during the day so bring an external hard drive or USB stick and save your work to that. Anything you save to a lab computer will be deleted the next day. So, that opus you wrote during lab time? Gone!

Your Enrollment Agreement specifies your agreement with respect to Digital Rights Management when using our computers (Section I.E.). If you need clarification as to this clause, please talk to the Admissions and Program Manager.

Here are some general troubleshooting issues with easy solutions

• The mouse isn’t working!
  • Is it plugged in? Check the USB connections in the back.
  • Are you working in the Yellow Lab? Try pressing the KVM switch! (little rectangle)
• The monitor isn’t working!
  • Is it turned on? There should be a blue light at the bottom of the monitor if it is. If not, push the soft-button on the front of the screen and the monitor will turn on.
• I got no plug-ins!
  • Is the iLok plugged in? Sometimes students remove this to plug in their jump drives.
• There’s no sound!!
  • This could be a few things. First thing to check is that the Headphones are plugged in all the way and to the right plug on the computer. It has a Headphone image on it.
  • Second thing to check is the preferences on your DAW. It should be set to “built in output”.
  • If you hear sound but the MIDI keyboard is not working, make sure it’s got power / is turned on. Then, check to make sure its USB cable is plugged in. If its still not making sound after that, either restart the DAW or restart the computer. Remember that any files on the desktop will be wiped so store any files on your drive first!
