An invitation from Barker College:
This Reconciliation Week, we are hosting a professional learning session presented by survivors of the Kinchela Boys Home. I have seen this powerful presentation a number of times, and it is so impactful. The stories told by these Uncles are the clearest example of intergenerational trauma that you will hear. Additionally, one of the presenters is a grandfather of children at Darkinjung. Remote staff, I can set up a MSTeams meeting to facilitate your attendance if you wish – just let me know.
This is an open PL session – please share with your networks (within and outside Barker). RSVP to the Barker Institute here https://barker.institute/events/event-registration-form/2023-Truth-Telling/.

As you may be aware, NESA has announced changes to the Accreditation for Schools and for Teachers. The changes come into play on November 29th.

There are some key changes for staff:
NESA now makes the final accreditation decision for all teachers. The Head of School or their delegate, makes a recommendation only.
From November 29th teachers will need to have completed accredited PL in all four priority areas:

It is unclear at the time of writing, if there will be transition arrangements put in place or if you will need to comply with point 2.
For those staff who are within 3 months of your re-accreditation date, you may wish to submit your maintenance before the changes come into place. If you wish to do this, please ensure all tasks are completed before COB on 23rd November. Teachers were keen to attend workshops which they were unable to participate in on the day. The graphic below indicates the interest for each workshop. We shall endeavor to find time to repeat popular workshops for interested staff.
Thank you to teams for completing the commitment activity. Before the end of term each team will spend time reflecting on the progress you have made to embed learnings from the Social Pillar.
Remember to update etams with your PL hours. This counts as elective PL (With the exception of First Nations, which is accredited)
The Social Pillar Component would give you 2.5 hours of elective PL. Depending on the workshop you completed, suitable descriptors could be:
1.1.2 Use teaching strategies based on knowledge of students’ physical, social and intellectual development and characteristics to improve student learning.
1.3.2 Design and implement teaching strategies that are responsive to the learning strengths and needs of students from diverse linguistic, cultural, religious and socio-economic backgrounds.
3.2.2 Plan and implement well-structured learning and teaching programs or lesson sequences that engage students and promote learning.
3.5.2 Use effective verbal and non-verbal communication strategies to support student understanding, participation, engagement and achievement.
4.1.2 Establish and implement inclusive and positive interactions to engage and support all students in classroom activities.
6.4.2 Undertake professional learning programs designed to address identified student learning needs.
The remaining workshops will give you 2 hours of elective PL. You will need to match descriptors to the workshops that you participated in.
