This is the first year of a two-year course in Physical Education. This course is required for 9th grade students and is designed for students to participate in a course that will enhance physical fitness, social cooperation, and knowledge of human movement through a variety of activities. This will provide them with skills and knowledge needed for an ongoing healthy lifestyle beyond the school experience.

This is the second year of a two-year course in Physical Education. It provides students with the skills of individual and team sports. This class is for those students who wish for a variety of activities. Emphasis is placed upon improving skill level and intra-class competition.

Dance I is an introductory course for students to study the fundamental genres of dance. The course will allow them to create their own dance composition at the end of the year. Throughout the course the students will learn warm-up techniques, working vocabulary of movement germane to the genre, historical and cultural content. The course is designed for all students with or without previous experience. The course will prepare the student to move forward to more advanced classes. The purpose of Dance I is to introduce students to the study of dance. Emphasis will be placed on proper technique and vocabulary. Different genres of dance will be studied including ballet, jazz, tap, musical theater. Dance history specific to each genre will be infused through each unit of study. The goal of this class is to develop proper dance technique. This includes body alignment, strength, flexibility, rhythm and coordination. Students will execute techniques appropriate to the genre in a combination that will strengthen memorization and sequencing. Focus on proper alignment and technique and terminology are key. Kinesthetic principal of body awareness, flexibility, strength and balance are included in all units. Students will be introduced to the elements of self-expression through self-choreographed pieces.

Dance 2 is a proficient level course for students with at least one or more years of formal dance training. Its purpose is to increase one’s body awareness, technique and strength training while demonstrating dance movement. Through the continued exploration of a variety of dance genres, students will advance their dance vocabulary, deepen their connection between the physical and emotional components of dance and continue to broaden their choreography and technical skills. Students will continue to explore the elements of self-expression through improvisational work and self-choreographed pieces. The students will prepare for performance opportunities through rehearsal of routines, staging awareness, technical preparation for live audiences in costumed performances. The goal for this course is to give students the opportunity to advance on a technical level, create dance pieces as a means of self-expression, evaluate the process and product of that creation and better learn to assess their own progress throughout the course.

This course is designed to include applications of beginning dance movements and technique to advanced movement combinations and preparation of choreography and performance. Students learn to express themselves through a variety of movement techniques as well as express themselves on paper with demonstrations of critique writing. This course may be repeated for credit.

This course is designed to address the technical and performance requirements of a competitive performing dance team. The curriculum includes advanced dance techniques including but not limited to jazz, ballet, modern, tap and character. The class focus is on performance demands including but not limited to half-time shows, parades, indoor competition, annual dance concerts, pep assemblies, traveling shows for the community and related performance opportunities, physical fitness testing, goal setting and nutritional information. This course may be repeated for credit.

PE Band

This course is taken during zero period designed to develop an appreciation for marching music and to develop physical principles of movement combined with playing a musical instrument. Class instruction includes exercise and fitness and music fundamentals combined with preparation to perform in parade and field tournaments. This course is paired with another Band course throughout the school day. This course may be repeated for credit.

Show Choir

The show choir curriculum is focused on the musical theatre, gospel and global pop genres. As sight-singing and vocal technique are covered in the corequisite choir class, most of class time is spent on dance, choreography and showmanship. Students will not only be asked to learn from guest choreographers, but will also create their own choreography throughout the year. A variety of dance styles will be covered in the course. Competitions and concerts serve as formative group assessments in addition to performances for community events. Students will receive P.E. credit; once the two year P.E. requirement has been met will receive Fine Art credit.
Unified Sports PE

This course is a fully inclusive program that combines students with disabilities and General Ed Students in a non-competitive learning environment. Unified Physical Education allows all students to participate in developmentally appropriate activities including lifetime activities, physical fitness, and sports. Students will work together to increase competence and confidence in a variety of physical activities. Through ongoing leadership opportunities, members of this course will be empowered to help create a more inclusive and accepting school environment for all students. All students should be encouraged to use their unique skills to support each other.
