This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL) and the Deaf community. Students will learn basic vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and cultural foundations of ASL. Students will begin to learn to express themselves through signing by using: concrete ideas, fingerspelling and grammar. Students will broaden their communication skills through interaction with individuals in the Deaf community. Receptive and expressive practices, conversational behaviors,and various aspects such as current issues within Deaf community will be introduced in this course.

This course is a continuation of the study of the fundamentals of American Sign Language: comprehension skills, grammatical structures, practice in the production aspects of the language, and continued exposure to Deaf culture. ASL 3 is a year-long course that builds on the skills and vocabulary learned in ASL 1 and ASL 2 and delve deeper into applications of those concepts to create more sophisticated and complex language. Students taking this course will develop a deeper understanding of deaf culture, advanced their signing abilities, and be able to sign more naturally. Students will have opportunities to practice interpretation signing during school functions and to teach elementary school children basic signing in a series of field trips to the elementary schools.

This course reinforces and expands world language skills and multicultural awareness. Students advance by learning and using more complex structures and forms, as well as more vocabulary. Listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills are taught within a cultural context and practiced in communicative activities. Cultural units on French literature, cuisine, art, and music may be added at this level. French is used increasingly for instruction.

This is an advanced course that provides an in-depth, intensive study of the French language through practice of more complex structures and more extensive vocabulary. French 3 Honors provides further opportunity to practice the four basic language skills to help prepare students who will be taking the Advanced Placement French language exam. The course increases emphasis on speaking, reading, writing, and listening, and continues to present information pertaining to the life and culture of the people. This course is conducted almost exclusively in the French language.

The AP Spanish Literature and Culture course uses a thematic approach to introduce students to representative texts (short stories, novels, poetry, and essays) from Peninsular Spanish, Latin American, and United States Hispanic literature. Students continue to develop proficiencies across the full range of the modes of communication (interpersonal, presentational, and interpretive), honing their critical reading and analytical writing skills. Literature is examined within the context of its time and place, as students reflect on the many voices and cultures present in the required readings. The course also includes a strong focus on cultural connections and comparisons, including exploration of various media (e.g., art, film, articles, and literary criticism).

Spanish for Native Speakers 3 is designed to meet the needs of students who speak Spanish but require additional formal instruction to develop their literacy to an optimum level. This course targets the linguistic needs of native speakers and will enhance their ability to speak and write linguistically, syntactically, and grammatically correct Spanish and give them an opportunity to become familiar with several literary works of Hispanic authors.
