The purpose of this year-long course is to provide a foundation and explore a variety of art mediums, skills and techniques to be able to create original and personal artworks. The elements and principles of art will be presented as an organizational framework to help guide students through the process of making art. The course will provide students with lessons in the care and use of a variety of art-making media, approaches to art-making techniques, and vocabulary necessary to discuss, analyze, and critique their own and others artwork. Historical and Cultural references will be used to enhance a student’s knowledge, appreciation, and understanding of the art in our world. This is a studio class.

This year-long course is a continuation to the Art Fundamentals foundation class. It is designed to build on existing knowledge of art making skills and design concepts complimented by art history, theory, appreciation and criticism. Students will improve their techniques in the mediums that they have previously explored, be introduced to new techniques and materials, and explore approaches to idea origination. This is elective instruction of a year length, designed to further instruct the art student with experiences in the proper use of a variety of different materials and to instruct them in additional drawing and painting techniques. Instruction includes contemporary and historical references as well as processes of criticism and evaluation. Learning techniques include lecture and demonstration, experimentation, guided practice, and individual instruction as needed when students produce theme-based projects. The advanced drawing and painting student will identify specific media and subject(s) of interest, and then work within those identified areas. Advanced students will also emphasize experimental techniques and multimedia approaches to artistic problems. Students will create artworks for contests, school-sponsored events, and their individual portfolios. Projects will include The Art of Soup (feed the hungry and help the homeless), Every 15 Minutes (prevent drunk driving), The PTSA Reflections Contest (create a better world), The Chapman University Holocaust Art and Writing Contest (study history so as not to be repeated), and additional non-theme based contests which provide opportunities for creative expression as well as help to build the student’s portfolio. This is elective instruction, of one year length, designed to challenge the advanced art student to pursue projects and areas of individual interest. The course of study in this class is both directed and self-directed. Instruction includes lessons in the use of a wide variety of art tools, media and techniques. Areas of personal interest as well as new areas open for exploration, experimentation, and problem solving are encouraged. The development of aesthetic judgment and evaluation is indicated. Vocational opportunities are discussed. This is a studio class.

Students will use a variety of hand building and decorating techniques in producing both functional and non-functional ceramic pieces. Instruction will include techniques in hand-building as well as working on the potter’s wheel. Information regarding the historical development of ceramics as an art form will also be given. Classroom instruction will emphasize auditory and visual experiences of the cinematic arts. Students will utilize and apply skills in areas of program concepts, scripting, storyboarding, visualizing, producing and editing. Students will learn by creating a variety of video documents into successful video productions. Emphasis is placed on the conceptualization, planning and execution of advanced television programming and the creative aspect of television communication.

This elective course, of a year's length, is designed to develop an awareness and basic understanding of the universality of ideas and interdependence of the arts collectively called the humanities. Following all tenants of the California art framework, classroom instruction is designed to include auditory, kinesthetic, and visual experiences as it relates to the field of art. Students will explore historical contributions in order to observe, analyze, evaluate, and better appreciate the function of art in historical and contemporary societies. Student projects stress the study of color theory, form, medium, and time management as part of the creative and self-reflective process, as well as contribute to lifelong learning and career skills.
