HEALTH SCIENCE 1 semester Grade 9
This is a one semester course which covers health topics such as the body systems, human reproduction, mental and physical well-being and first aid. The effects of drugs, alcohol and tobacco on the human body are also studied in detail. This course meets high school graduation requirements.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION 2 years Grade 9-12 CO-ED P. E.
This is a one year course which will include lessons in both team and life-time sports. Students will be required to wear appropriate physical education uniforms daily and participate in the activity being taught. In addition to the physical education activities, the rules, safety and history of each sport will be studied. Students will also participate in cardiovascular activities and freshman students will take the required CA Fitness testing.

Mr. Peterson
Mr. Peterson, a seasoned educator and coach, brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to excellence to Palo Verde High School, where he has been teaching since 2006. Graduating from Southern Utah University, he holds a Bachelor's degree in Physical Education with an emphasis in coaching and a minor in health, as well as a Master's Degree in Health Education from Trident University International.
In addition to his role as a dedicated Health teacher, Mr. Peterson is a proud father, and his passion for education extends beyond the classroom. His teaching style, characterized by a laid-back yet firm approach, reflects his genuine desire for the success and well-being of all his students.
On the coaching front, Mr. Peterson has made significant contributions, leading Boys and Girls Golf teams and achieving remarkable success with the Girls Basketball team. Notably, he guided the Girls Basketball team to victory in the CIF-SDS Girls Basketball championship in 2015, 2022, and 2023. His strategic coaching style and motivational leadership have not only brought home championships but have also left a lasting impact on the students he mentors.
Coach/Mr. Esquibel
A dedicated educator and coach at Palo Verde High School, Mr. Esquibel hails from Indio with strong family ties in Blythe. His profound passions for music, sports, and physical education have shaped a diverse skill set that enriches his role in education. Beginning with an Associate's Degree in Music Theory from the College of the Desert, he continued his academic journey, earning a Bachelor's Degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Physical Education, followed by a Master's Degree in Kinesiology with a focus on Sports Management.
Actively involved in coaching and education since his high school graduation, Coach Esquibel initially contributed to the varsity staffs of Football and Track and Field at Shadow Hills High School. His expertise and dedication were evident in his roles before he transitioned to Palo Verde High School, where he became an integral part of multiple coaching staffs. Recognized as a film analysis specialist, he commits considerable time to watching and breaking down film, demonstrating a relentless dedication to supporting student athletes in their athletic pursuits. Mr. Esquibel's dynamic background and extensive coaching experience underscore his unwavering commitment to shaping the academic and athletic experiences of students at Palo Verde High School.
Alicia Albanez, a seasoned educator with a passion for teaching and coaching, embarked on her teaching journey in 1992. After taking a hiatus, she found her home at Palo Verde High School in 2006, where she has been making a lasting impact on students ever since. Alicia is a proud alumna of California State University, Stanislaus, where she graduated with a BS in Physical Education and earned a minor in Biology, highlighting her dedication to both the sciences and physical education.
Throughout her extensive career, Alicia has demonstrated her versatility by teaching multiple subjects, including math and science, showcasing her commitment to academic excellence. Not only dedicated to the classroom, Alicia has also been an influential figure on the sports field. She has coached Track and Field, Cross Country, Volleyball, and Basketball, contributing to the success and development of numerous student-athletes. Her coaching prowess has played a pivotal role in bringing league championships to several sports teams at Palo Verde High School.
Beyond the school setting, Alicia celebrates a 30-year marriage to Mr. Albanez, as pictured. Together, they have raised three adult children and are proud grandparents to three grandchildren. Alicia Albanez's enduring dedication to education, coaching, and her role in fostering success within the Palo Verde High School community is a testament to her commitment and impact.
