Required Courses
Students at Palo Verde High School should work to take a schedule of courses that meets their academic goals:
Graduation Requirements which all students must meet.
a-g Requirements for students looking at attending university.
NCAA Requirements for students looking to earn athletic scholarships or to play collegiate or professional sports.
Summer School for courses who need to recover credit.
Students should also look at our Post-Secondary page for more information on applying to colleges and universities.
Academic Plans for Graduation
Each student should meet with a counselor to develop a four-year academic plan. The model above shows the rough 'outline' around which these plans are built.
Below a number of example academic plans are given. Each example meets both the high school graduation requirements and the minimum a-g requirements for admission into a CSU or UC. In most cases the generic version of a class is used ("English 10" instead of an Honors equivalent) but these can be substituted.
Example Academic Plan: General Course Plan
Example Academic Plan: Automotive Tech (CTE)
The example above meets only the minimum for a-g requirements. It is a good example for how even a student who was behind in 8th Grade can still meet the requirements for applying to a 4-year university, and complete a college CTE pathway.
Example Academic Plan: Advanced College-Prep
The example plan given above meets and typically exceeds the "recommended" courses for a-g while also meeting the minimum requirements for admission into "elite" universities. More specialized plans are possible. The main points:
taking Honors / AP courses when available
taking a Lab Science and Mathematics course each school year
completing a Calculus-level Mathematics course
meeting at least the third-year equivalent in a language other than English
taking the most rigorous courses available at the high school
Students hitting the main points listed above, while being actively involved in extracurricular activities, will be capable of meeting admissions requirements for even highly competitive "top 25" colleges and universities.
Example Academic Plan: Web Developer (Dual CTE)
The example given above makes use of both the on-campus "cybersecurity" CTE pathway and CIS courses from Palo Verde College to empower a student with skills as both a system administrator and web designer, tailored for university admissions or freelance work in the tech industry.
Example Academic Plan: Triple-AG CTE
Many students at PVHS are part of the FFA (Future Farmers of America). Some choose to complete multiple CTE pathways. Students seeking a more serious academic plan could adjust the plan by (for example):
taking Honors or AP courses where available
substituting one CTE pathway for Spanish III and either Physics or an advanced science course
substituting Statistics with AP Calculus AB
Work with your counselor to determine the most appropriate sequence for meeting your academic goals.
