ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

3rd Grade Expectations: Please continue to reinforce 3rd grade behavior and academic expectations at home. We are teaching our 3rd graders how to strive for academic excellence, maintain a growth mindset, take accountability for their words and actions, and model respect towards our teachers, staff, and peers. Reinforcing these expectations at home will help our class have a successful and fun year at school.

 

APEX Fun Run: Thursday, September 24th is Tierra Linda's APEX Fun Run! 3rd grade will be running at 8:45am. Make sure to eat breakfast and bring a water bottle!

Parent Conferences: Thank you to everyone who has already signed up for a parent conference. I’m looking forward to meeting with you and having the opportunity to connect about your child’s progress in third grade thus far. Benchmark Assessments: Today you will see the first graded Benchmark  (ELA) assessment come home. We read the passage, questions, and answer choices aloud as we walked through the assessment together, whole group. Please review these assessments as they come home with your child. As a third grade team, we understand that these assessments may be challenging. Please be aware that this is just one assessment to measure their learning. They will have a variety of opportunities to show their learning throughout the year.



OUR WEEK AT A GLANCE

 

Math:  Topic D lessons provide students with multiple opportunities to build understanding of the two interpretations of division: partitive (number of groups known) and measurement (size of each group known). Building on their foundational understanding of division from Topic B, students establish the unknown factor in a context and construct a tape diagram to match. Relating the quotient to an unknown factor problem supports students as they progress toward fluency with multiplication and division facts within 100.

On Friday of next week, 3rd grade will begin timed multiplication tests. Please assist your child in studying for 10 minutes every night. The assessments will look like the worksheet that came home for homework on Thursday of last week. Students will be working to beat their own previous time and set a personal record. The goal is to improve their own speed and accuracy while building confidence with their multiplication facts. Thank you for your support and encouragement at home!

 

Reader's Workshop: We will finish our Benchmark Unit 1: Government for the People. Our focus will be answering the essential question: Why do people participate in government? 

Students will continue practicing skills such as identifying the main idea and key details, using context clues to determine the meaning of unfamiliar words, and answering text-dependent questions. Students will take the Unit 1 Benchmark Assessment on Friday.

Spelling: Long o and long u 

Grammar: Subject-verb agreement and capitalizing titles  


Writer's Workshop: This week students will continue to focus on writing a well-constructed, 5 sentence paragraph. Students will be writing about a superpower to align with our superhero Apex fundraiser. Students will be writing complete sentences using correct capitalization, spelling, and punctuation. They will continue to write a topic sentence, supporting details and a concluding wrap-up sentence. 

 

Social Studies: This week, students will continue with Week 29 of their Studies Weekly Curriculum. We are jumping to Week 29 to dive into Civics and Government. Students will be learning about important documents such as the U.S. Constitution and the purpose of government. 

 

Science: In science, students are learning how scientists observe traits, identify similarities and variations, and ask questions about the natural world. Students will explore wolf traits and human traits while using observations and graphs to identify patterns. 

 

P.E.: Please dress appropriately on Monday and Friday for P.E/Dance class every week.
