Hello B1 families,


ANNOUNCEMENTS


Daily 20 Reading Log: Students will begin reading a "just-right" book for 20 minutes each night. The book your child picks must be at an independent reading level. The goal is for students to read a chapter book. It is your child's responsibility to complete this log each day. Please sign this folder and send it back to the classroom every Friday. 


Weekly Folder: Your student will come home every Monday (or first instructional day of the week) with a BLUE WEEKLY FOLDER. This folder will include dated pages with information about any missing assignments or behaviors we are working on at school. A parent/grown-up signature is required. Students will return the folder the next school day, unless absent. Blue folders are coming home today. I look forward to seeing all signed Blue Weekly Folders returned TOMORROW: Wednesday, September 9th.



OUR WEEK AT A GLANCE


Math: This week, students will use the properties of multiplication to explore strategies they can use to multiply efficiently. They will explore the commutative and distributive properties of multiplication. 


Reader's Workshop: We will begin our Benchmark curriculum Unit 1: Government for the People. Our focus will be answering the essential question: Why do people participate in government? 

Spelling: Short Vowel Sounds 

Grammar: Concrete and abstract nouns 


Writer's Workshop: Students will finish their first narrative titled "My Summer". 

 

Science: Students observe animals and birds to identify similarities and differences in their traits. They record their observations on T-charts and discuss their ideas with classmates and partners. The lesson introduces Patterns as a scientific tool for grouping organisms based on shared traits. Through discussion and the Thought Swap routine, students begin recognizing patterns that can help scientists determine how organisms are related.

 

Social Studies: This week, students will continue with Week 7 in our Studies Weekly curriculum. This week, the tools of a geographer are explained. Maps and coordinate grid systems are tools people made to learn about the Earth.
