Staghorn Sumac

Rhus typhina

Kelelenikanakw

A sumac recognized by its combination of alternate, pinnately compound leaves with an unwinged rachis, toothed leaflets, hairy twigs and petioles, and large cone-shaped clusters and red fruit.

In Lenape culture the white part of the root is used for toothache or canker sores in the mouth. And the root was made into a liquid that is a mouthwash, and that it served to "tighten up the teeth" (cure pyorrhea).
