The shallowly lobed, essentially hairless leaves, comparatively long petiole, and often shallow acorn cup help distinguish Northern Red Oak.

In Lenape culture a tea made from the wood chips is used as antidote for bowel trouble, and for sore throats and hoarseness. Used by singers to keep their throats clear.
