Sixth grade is a year of transition and growth. Many changes begin to take place as the students emerge into young adults and discover their own strengths. One of our goals is to develop these strengths and prepare students for middle school.
We believe strongly that homework is a valuable learning activity. It is given for the purpose of practice and reinforcement of classroom instruction. Its many applications include skill reinforcement, self-discipline, responsibility, time management, and an opportunity for parents to engage in their child’s learning.
Homework is seen as an opportunity to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. As such, every assignment need not be used for evaluation purposes, but assignments turned in to the teacher will be acknowledged with feedback including, teacher acknowledgement and/or comments, peer feedback and/or self-evaluation. Weekend homework, generally, will not be assigned on Friday to be due Monday. Exceptions may be made for work needing to be finished from class or unusual circumstances.
Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in the student choosing an automatic step four requiring a conference with the student, parent/guardian, and teacher. This includes copying homework, classwork, test answers, talking during a test or quiz, allowing someone to copy your work, and trying to pass off someone else’s work as your own. The student will be required to re-complete the assignment, test, etc. to insure the student learns the material. The student may be earning an N or U mark on their citizenship skill area.
AI: PVUSD Guidelines The use of AI tools to write essays, complete learning tasks, or answer test questions is prohibited. Words and ideas generated by AI tools will constitute plagiarism or academic dishonesty. Any plagiarism or academic dishonesty will be dealt with according to our handbook policies.
The use of PVUSD devices and/or email to create an AI account is prohibited.
On a daily basis, please refer to your child’s Agenda, Homework Folder, and Take Home folder for information about classwork, assignments, tests, projects, etc. Writing will be integrated into ALL subject areas. Mrs. Day teaches STEAM. Ms. Bacon teaches Humanities. ELA (English Language Arts) is taught in the homeroom classroom. Mrs. Somar teaches the Content Replacement classes for math and reading. Ms. Consolian is our resource teacher.
It is recommended your child keep a "take home" folder for home-school communication. "Take Home" items might include graded assignments, assessments, PTO communications, SSES and/or PVUSD information and events. "Back to School" items might include activities/assessments requiring parent signature, RISE Up/PBIS communication forms, field trip forms, and SSES and/or PVUSD events and order forms. (Students will be given a purple "take home" folder the first week of school.)
During the sixth grade year notification regarding a missing assignment, test, or project will be sent to you through Infinite Campus. The email message will arrive in the inbox from PVUSD-Automated Messenger/Infinite Campus. In the body of the email, the name(s) of the "missing piece(s)" will be listed. Please check comments in Infinite Campus for details about a missed assignment or assessment.
Students are often held responsible for obtaining a parent signature on a test or assessment to ensure communication is occurring between school and home. Please assist your child in this process by asking your child, on a daily basis, if there is anything that needs to be signed.
*The 2025-2026 Syllabus for Ms. Bacon and Ms. Day's classes will be shared with students and families the first week of school in August 2025.
