Class Policies

Our Homework Philosophy

Sixth grade is a year of transition and growth.  Many changes begin to take place as the students emerge into young adults and discover their own strengths.   One of our goals is to develop these strengths and prepare students for middle school.

We believe strongly that homework is a valuable learning activity.  It is given for the purpose of practice and reinforcement of classroom instruction.  Its many applications include skill reinforcement, self-discipline, responsibility, time management, and an opportunity for parents to engage in their child’s learning.

Homework is seen as an opportunity to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. As such, every assignment need not be used for evaluation purposes, but assignments turned in to the teacher will be acknowledged with feedback including, teacher acknowledgement and/or comments, peer feedback and/or self-evaluation.  Weekend homework, generally, will not be assigned on Friday to be due Monday.  Exceptions may be made for work needing to be finished from class or unusual circumstances.

Cheating/Plagiarism

Cheating and/or plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in the student choosing an automatic step four requiring a conference with the student, parent/guardian, and teacher. This includes copying homework, classwork, test answers, talking during a test or quiz, allowing someone to copy your work, and trying to pass off someone else’s work as your own. The student will be required to re-complete the assignment, test, etc. to insure the student learns the material. The student may be earning an N or U mark on their citizenship skill area.

Tools to be Successful

AGENDA

On a daily basis, please refer to your child’s Agenda, Homework Folder, and Take Home folder for information about classwork, assignments, tests, projects, etc.  Writing will be integrated into ALL subject areas.  Mrs. Day teaches STEAM. Ms. Cunningham teaches Humanities.   ELA (English Language Arts) is taught in the homeroom classroom. Mrs. Wilhelm teaches the Gifted Pullout math and reading classes.  Mrs. Langley is our resource teacher.

TAKE HOME FOLDER

It is recommended your child keep a "take home" folder for home-school communication.  "Take Home" items might include graded assignments, assessments, PTO communications, SSES and/or PVUSD information and events.  "Back to School" items might include activities/assessments requiring parent signature, Make Your Day communication forms, field trip forms, and SSES and/or PVUSD events and order forms.

MISSING ASSIGNMENTS

During the sixth grade year notification regarding a missing assignment, test, or project will be sent to you through Infinite Campus.  The email message will arrive in the inbox from PVUSD-Automated Messenger/Infinite Campus.  In the body of the email, the name(s) of the "missing piece(s)" will be listed.

PARENT SIGNATURES

Students are often held responsible for obtaining a parent signature on a test or assessment to ensure communication is occurring between school and home. Please assist your child in this process by asking your child, on a daily basis, if there is anything that needs to be signed.
