PVSchools partners with third parties to improve our ability to use, analyze, store, and protect data. It is therefore incumbent on our providers to step up their game in proper use of student data. PVSchools takes this responsibility seriously and holds ourselves and our vendors accountable in that regard.

Key Terms:

  • Confidentiality: The obligation of a person with access to another individual’s personally identifiable information not to share it without consent.

  • De-Identified Data: Data that has been “anonymized” by removing all personally identifiable information, such as students’ names, to protect personal privacy.

  • Personally Identifiable Information (PII): Personal information (such as an individual’s name, Social Security number, birth date) that can be used to connect data with the correct individual.

  • Privacy:The balance between collection and dissemination of data, technology, and individuals’ right to have their personal information kept private.

  • Security:The policies and practices implemented at the state, district, and school levels to ensure that data are kept safe from corruption and that access is limited and appropriate. Data security helps ensure privacy and protect personally identifiable information.

  • COPPA: The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act

  • Data literacy: Data-literate educators continuously, effectively, and ethically access, interpret, act on, and communicate multiple types of data from state, local, classroom, and other sources to improve outcomes for students in a manner appropriate to educators’ professional roles and responsibilities.

  • Data governance: The roles, structures, and processes states use to make decisions about data sharing, access, use, and privacy.

  • Data literacy: Data-literate educators continuously, effectively, and ethically access, interpret, act on, and communicate multiple types of data from state, local, classroom, and other sources to improve outcomes for students in a manner appropriate to educators’ professional roles and responsibilities.

  • FERPA: The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act

  • PPRA: Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment
