The presence of present-day visual arts in places where the Catholic faith is being celebrated today is an exception rather than the norm. Which parish church has a work of art of the XXIst century? The galleries of the Vatican Museums go as far as the pontificate of Paul VI but neither Pope John Paul II, nor Benedict XVI nor Francis have taken much to heart to extend collections to current times.

Does this tell us something about the relationship between the place of the Catholic Church in today’s society?

La presenza di arti visive attuali nei luoghi in cui si celebra la fede cattolica oggi è un’eccezione piuttosto che la norma. Quale chiesa parrocchiale ha un’opera d’arte del XXI secolo? Le gallerie dei Musei Vaticani arrivano fino al pontificato di Paolo VI, ma né Papa Giovanni Paolo II, né Benedetto XVI, né Francesco hanno preso molto a cuore di estendere le collezioni ai tempi attuali.

Questo ci dice qualcosa sul rapporto tra il posto della Chiesa cattolica nella società di oggi?

A pre-conference webinar entitled “The role of the present-day arts in Church Life today” took place on April 19th 2021. It was presented by Fr.Alain Arnould, OP. During the webinar Fr. Alain Arnould OP, and Sr Pavlina Maria OP both eloquently expressed the role of the present-day arts in the Church, but they differed in their opinion about the use of some contemporary art in Churches. Sr. Pavlina Maria expressed her concern to not scandalise the faithful, while Fr. Arnould stated that contemporary art can help us to pray. Fr. Arnould also said that it is important to be careful in the defining of Sacred art, and Secular art.

Fr. Arnould provides a marvellous, educational, and challenging presentation that has the potential to change the way that one looks at art, irrespective of wherever it is placed. He provides some keys to interpret art, and encourages the viewer to contemplate art skilfully, in order to better relate to the language, images, and people of contemporary society. He skilfully introduces choice words, and concepts that shed light on this art. He also shows how the human capacity for appreciating the arts can enrich, and diversify Church communities. This presentation is not to be missed for anyone, who desires to bridge the gap between the present-day arts, and Church life today.

Il 19 aprile ha avuto luogo un webinar pre-conferenza "Il ruolo delle arti contemporanee nella vita della Chiesa odierna" presentato da P. Alain Arnould, OP. Durante il webinar P. Alain Arnould OP, e Sr Pavlina Maria OP hanno espresso in modo eloquente il ruolo delle arti attuali nella Chiesa, ma la loro opinione differisce circa l'uso di alcune arti contemporanee nelle chiese. Suor Pavlina Maria ha espresso la sua preoccupazione del "non scandalizzare i fedeli" mentre P. Arnould ha affermato che l'arte contemporanea può aiutarci a pregare. P. Arnould ha anche detto che è importante essere attenti nel dare una definizione dell arte della Chiesa e dell'' arte secolare.

P. Arnould ci ha fornito una presentazione meravigliosa, educativa e stimolante che ha il potenziale di cambiare il modo in cui si guarda all'arte, indipendentemente da dove essa sia collocata. Ha fornito alcune chiavi di interpretazione dell'arte e incoraggiato lo spettatore a contemplare l'arte con abilità, per relazionarsi meglio con il linguaggio, le immagini e le persone nella società contemporanea. Ha introdotto abilmente parole scelte e concetti che fanno luce su quest'arte. Ha mostrato anche come la capacità umana di apprezzare le arti può arricchire e diversificare le comunità della Chiesa. Questa presentazione è da non perdere per chiunque desideri colmare la propria concezione nel divario tra le arti attuali e la vita della Chiesa di oggi.
