Academic Integrity & APA

Ethical Framework

Why is academic style important? What is the Purdue Global (PG) philosophy regarding academic style?

The Ethical Framework for using academic style in writing goes beyond simply crediting sources in academic work at Purdue Global. An Ethical Framework for Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC) is really about helping Purdue Global students and graduates understand how to present themselves professionally in all forms of communication.

In understanding the foundations for writing ethically across the university, the guiding document should be the Purdue Global Writing Center’s Writing With Integrity. This document should be required in all course resources across the university and referenced as a common foundation for writing ethics.

While APA is the accepted form of citation across the university, the expectation is that students, faculty, and graduates should always take some action to recognize the sources used for information and ideas, whether they are writing a paper, authoring a workplace report, or writing code. Also, it is important for students and graduates not to over-state their accomplishments or professional skills in an unethical way when applying for employment.

Finally, the Professional Competencies unique to Purdue Global are an important guide and gauge for success in developing this Ethical Framework for Writing Across the Curriculum. Ultimately, PG graduates should be able to present their Purdue Global Competency Report as a measure of their understanding of the communication skills and ethics that enable them to bridge the gap between the classroom and the workplace.

All Purdue Global stakeholders should follow the PG Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) Statement linked to the left. Additional student resources have also been added.

Plagiarism Reporting Process

A flowchart outlines the process an instructor follows when suspecting plagiarism in a student's work. The steps include confirming evidence through Turnitin or Google searches, reaching out to the student for more information, and consulting the department chair if needed. The key decision point is whether the instructor submits a plagiarism charge. If yes, the instructor recognizes the offense, assigns a zero, and offers guidance. If no, the instructor gives the student a chance for remediation. If the student completes the remediation, the instructor grades the rewritten assignment and submits a completed remediation form. If not, the instructor submits a plagiarism charge and assigns a zero.
