Writing Across the Curriculum (WAC)
Learning to Write; Writing to Learn
Purdue Global provides an integrated Writing Across the Curriculum initiative as part of its commitment to personalized, optimized learning for students who enter the university with varying experiences, levels of literacy, and goals. PG recognizes the fundamental role that writing plays in learning and expressing knowledge attained as well as in helping students grow throughout their academic programs and their careers within today’s dynamic global context. An inclusive culture of collaboration, empowerment, and respect is fostered for all stakeholders (students, faculty, staff, and leadership) through this process.
Promote the WAC philosophy to assist faculty of all disciplines, advisors, and other Purdue Global stakeholders in fostering effective written communication skills among student writers and alumni.
Offer WAC support to faculty of all disciplines, advisors, and other Purdue Global stakeholders through consultant requests, the WAConcierge services, professional development, writing/writing-related policies, and other resources.
Foster an ethical academic environment in coordination with all units of the university within established internal policies (e.g., the “Writing with Integrity” framework developed by the PG Writing Center) and external guidelines (e.g., “Statement of WAC Principles and Practices” (INWAC & CCCC, 2014).
Encourage an atmosphere of equity, empowerment, and respect conducive to inclusive communication, diversity, and equity.
Sustain the evolution of the WAC initiative as a fundamental component of the Purdue Global mission.
WAConcierge consultants are available to support the implementation of writing assignments into courses, present at meetings on writing-related topics, and offer other WAC support. Note: The WAConcierge consultants collaborate with PG faculty and staff only. Students should be directed to the PG Writing Center.
Purdue Global's focus on "learning to write; writing to learn" is truly a team effort: All stakeholders across the university—faculty, staff, administration, et al.—are committed to advancing the skills of our students. This commitment includes supporting and engaging with those who work with student writers at PG as well as our colleagues at other colleges and universities. Your involvement is integral to fostering a culture of effective writing and learning within our academic community.
The Writing Across the Curriculum Advisory Committee is a cross-institutional team that guides the advancement of our WAC initiative. The WAC Advisory Committee may be contacted at: WAConcierge@purdueglobal.edu.
