Accepting a student for fieldwork is a three-step process.
Review the addictions evaluation criteria.
Each student is required to strengthen the skills on the evaluation.
Please be sure that your facility will be able to provide students with appropriate experience.
Complete the Purdue University Global practicum Affiliation Agreement (if there is not one already in place with the school). This will be provided by the student.
A practicum Affiliation Agreement must be received and approved by Purdue University Global’s Clinical Placement Team before the student is cleared to enroll in the practicum course. Some sites have already formed affiliation agreements or an alliance partnership with Purdue University Global. If there is already an affiliation agreement in place, then there is no need to fill out another. If you are interested in pursuing an Alliance partnership with Purdue University Gobal, please contact Dawn Tesner at dtesner@purdueglobal.edu.
If your facility has a standard agreement for practicum and prefers to use that agreement rather than Purdue Global’s agreement, please submit the agreement to Dawn Tesner at DTesner@purdueglobal.edu.
Complete the paid addendum if the student is employed by the facility. If the student is an employee or will be paid by the facility during the rotation, the paid addendum also needs to be completed. This discloses that the student will be receiving reimbursement for hours for which he or she is also receiving educational credit. If the student will not be getting paid for their practicum hours, the paid addendum is not needed.
Select a supervisor for the student’s practicum.
The supervisor must have a master’s degree or higher in psychology or a behavioral health field and also be licensed at the state level to supervise students. Examples include the following:
Licensed clinical or counseling psychologist
Licensed professional counselor
Licensed clinical social worker
Licensed substance abuse counselor
Licensed psychiatrist
Licensed alcohol and drug counselor
Licensed substance use counselor
The supervisor may be an employee of the facility where the student will be completing the rotation.
Once a student begins practicum, the student will submit hours electronically via CORE ELMS, a document tracking system. You will receive an email to confirm or deny the hours via a link in the email with each submission of hours. Additionally, near the end of the term, the system will generate an evaluation for you to complete electronically, assessing the progress of the student.
You may locate a copy of the evaluation criteria here so that you will know the types of skills the student would be assessed on during the rotation. The evaluation must be filled out electronically as paper copies are not accepted.
The PG student is responsible for securing the practicum site and supervisor, gaining approval for the site and supervisor from PG, completing the minimum hours, and submitting all required documentation to PG’s clinical tracking software, CORE ELMS. Hours submitted to CORE ELMS for the courses must be completed during the academic term in which the course is taken. If a student’s state requires completion of more than the required minimum hours of practicum, the Clinical Placement Team can assist with enrollment in a practicum extension course to allow for the completion of additional practicum hours.
Students in Indiana are required to meet the standards for Indiana licensure as defined by Indiana regulations. Students in other states that have specific requirements for licensure addictions are responsible for knowing those requirements and determining how they will meet them.
PG Faculty will teach the practicum course and monitor student completion of hours. Faculty will also review the evaluation submitted by the practicum supervisor. Faculty will provide students with guidance and resources related to addictions licensure.
PG’s Clinical Placement Team (CPT) will review and approve all pre-practicum documentation in compliance with university policy. The CPT will serve as a secondary reviewer for completion of hours and evaluations to ensure compliance with university policy.
