Congratulations on your readiness to begin your Bachelor of Science in Addictions or Master of Science in Psychology addictions concentration practicum coursework. This is an exciting time in your academic program! This handbook is intended to provide an overview of the practicum, including policies, roles and responsibilities, ethical guidelines, and required documentation.

As you approach your practicum in addictions, this handbook is designed to prepare you to begin working in your chosen field. The objectives are to achieve the following:

• Help you understand the purpose of practicum.

• Identify the necessary steps to begin practicum.

• Outline the roles and responsibilities of the site, the University, and you.

DEFINITION

Practicum: A course of study designed specifically for the preparation of clinicians that involves the supervised, practical application of previously studied theory. Practicum also serves as a forum for exploring careers in addictions. It is an opportunity to be evaluated by and learn from practitioners in the field.
