OnShape is a powerful online based CAD design tool used to design 3D or 2D parts with extreme precision, creating files for different machinery including laser cutters, water jets, and 3D printers.
Adobe Illustrator is a CAD design tool used to create 2D designs that can be physically fabricated on different machinery such as a water jet, sticker printer, and laser cutter.
Steps:
Before starting any computer design, the first step is to create a sketch of what my design will look like. This sketch is called a thumbnail sketch, which is the first part of this design process.
For my design, I went with a very geometric design, for my father. It reflects my father's interest in mathematical design and mathematical processes.
After designing my thumbnail sketch, the next step for me is creating my design on CAD. First, I went to OnShape, as this had the proper tools to allow for easy creation of geometrical design. OnShape is a very powerful and precise CAD tool which allows for very accurately measured design.
Next, I ported my design over to Adobe Illustrator to prepare for the laser cutting process (the laser cutter utilizes Adobe Illustrator).
After porting my design over to Adobe Illustrator and formatting the file properly for laser cutting, I ported the Adobe Illustrator file over to a flash drive. From there, I uploaded it to the laser cutting computer and cut out of wood. Originally we were supposed to use Hale Koa wood to cut, however it proved to difficult to use and prepare.
After laser cutting, as this is still a jewelry project, the final touches of the project involved preparing to give them to the intended person, in this case, my dad. This involved inserting a necklace chain into the center hole, and sanding the edges of the piece to create a nice and smooth wooden piece.
