Suggested Maths Activities
* Look for numbers, shapes and patterns in the environment .
* Play boardgames - Snake and Ladders.
* Practise counting forwards and backwards. For younger children focus on 1-10 or 1-20. Older children focus on 1-100 and any number forwards and backwards to 100.
* Do Calendar Maths everyday. Use a child friendly calendar and a scrapbook. Click on the links below.
* Play card games -for example how many different ways can you make 5 ? You will find other card game suggestions for young children on the internet.
* Practise writing numbers. Focusing on formation.
* Rainbow writing of numbers.
* Make a group of objects and talk about why they belong together.
* Practise basic facts , addition and subtraction up to 5.
* Make a counting box and include a set of numbers, tape measure and interesting things to count. Remember to practise lots of one-to-one counting.
* Cut out shapes and make shape pictures and shape patterns.
* Make a 100s board and count forwards and backwards in ones, twos, fives and tens.
* Play Roll the Dice and then count them. Start with 2 dice and then proceed to 3. Younger children can count all the dots and children who have been at school longer can count on from the first number.
*Do a Little Count: take a handful of raisins/lego/pasta to organise (usually into a line). Then touch count 1 by 1 as you say the number and touch each item as you count .
*Do a Big Count: same as above but take 2-5 handfuls of whatever you would like to count. Organise the objects into rows and count forwards and backwards.
*Explore and create different types of Patterns
*Make play dough together, measuring and discussing the ingredients - then have fun with it
