Sustainable and resilient communities in the Asia Pacific region through Research, Development and Innovation.

Mission

The Palawan State University shall pursue research, development and resilience through inclusive economic growth, research and development utilization, and environmental and cultural integrity.

Goals

One of the leading universities in the Asia Pacific enhancing community resilience and sustainable development in the Philippines through research, development and innovations.

Objectives

By 2020, Palawan State University should be able to generate, adapt and transfer technologies and processes towards:
  1. Development of teaching and learning systems for adult learners and underprivileged/marginalized groups;
  2. Regeneration or rehabilitation of degraded areas;
  3. Mitigation of disaster and adaptation to climate change;
  4. Conservation of biodiversity;
  5. Maintenance of socio-cultural and linguistic diversity and documentation of endangered languages;
  6. Added value to existing major and unique products and services of Palawan;
  7. Prevention of diseases (e.g. Functional food, drug discovery and development, information and communications technology in health);
  8. Economic mobility and sustainable environmental management in the Asia Pacific;
  9. Exploration and use of renewable and non-renewable resources;
  10. Eco-development and green economy;
  11. Technology and business incubation, agri/eco-tourism and entreneurial development, and;
  12. Economic growth through participatory, multi-stakeholder research on renewable and non-renewable energy sources, biodiversity, tourism, preventive health practices, indigenous knowledge systems and practices, and climate change adaptation and mitigation.

Research Agenda

The herein identified themes and subthemes are highly recommended for adoption by the different colleges. It is further encouraged that each college should draft their respective research programs and projects with due consideration to the contents of the new R&D agenda and upon consultation with the members of the College.
Cluster I (Tourism Value and Impacts)Areas included in Cluster I is mostly valued for its tourism, hence, the major theme focuses on Tourism Value and Impacts. Suggested sub-themes are: value chain mapping of tourism goods, tourism contribution to GDP, tourism and sustainable development, tourism development, social carrying capacity, event tourism, environmental-economic impact of tourism sector, cultural heritage and tourism, among others.
Cluster II (Disaster Response, Risk Reduction, and Management)Research and development initiatives in Cluster II areas are directed towards Disaster Response, Risk Reduction and Management. Subthemes that included are: risk management policies, urban resilience, emergency response, disaster risk mitigation, determination of community's vulnerability and adaptive capacity, risk-sensitive development, ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and adaptation, among others.
Cluster III (Rehabilitation/Restoration Strategies in Mining Sites)On the other hand, Cluster III is best recognized as center of agriculture and mining of the province, hence, rehabilitation/restoration strategies in mining sites become its central theme. the subthemes are: hydrological analysis, environmental assessment, landscape restoration, ecosystem rehabilitation, rehabilitation strategies, integrated soil and sediment research, restoration strategies, and sustainable recovery measures, among others.
Cluster IV (Small Island Ecosystem Carrying Capacity)A special consideration is accorded to areas that are included within the island municipalities, hence, the them focuses on small island ecosystem carrying capacity. The subthemes recommended are: sustainable fishery options, sustainable local development and knowledge, technology for food security, and carrying capacity assessment (ecological and social), among others.
