Thai pharmacy is a field of Traditional Thai Medicine. It involves the study of the characteristics and medicinal properties of herbal remedies, the principles of Thai herbal prescriptions, as well as the methods for preparing quality Thai drugs and their dosage forms. In order to study, the students receive the basic knowledge in“Pharmaceutical and Folk Botany” to understand and distinguish the characteristics of medicinal plants in various genus and family. In order to be able to apply this knowledge to treat patients, they also take other related courses in pharmacy. The subject areas are as follows :
Materia Medica : knowledge of plants, animals and elements that can are employed in the treatment of disorders
Chemical Constituent in Materia Medica : in order to integrate herbal medicines into the conventional medical system,the students gain knowledge of the major constituents in materia medica and also acquire laboratory skills.
Group of Materia Medica : to recognize the certain groups of herbal medicines/remedies used in patient treatment.
Traditional Pharmaceutics : to select quality materials in order to prepare and produce different herbal medicines according to Thai traditional medicine methods and modern pharmacy techniques.
Furthermore, the contents entitled traditional household remedies, traditional drugs in the national list of essential medicines and the laws relating to the production and distribution of traditional medicines have been engaged. In order to gain an in-depth knowledge of Thai drugs, students have to gain practical experience of their uses. The Faculty of Traditional Thai Medicine employs different strategies to promote the development of this body of knowledge, for example, students have to undertake forest trekking with Thai traditional healers and to do Thai pharmacy internships at community hospitals in different regions of Thailand. Additionally, the faculty of Traditional Thai Medicine also promotes students’ research projects relating to the utilization and development of herbal remedies.
