FAQs

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How do we schedule a meeting with you?

Students can come and see us anytime, and the best ways to get a hold of us are via email, Microsoft Teams, or on the sign up sheets in Student Services. It usually takes us about 24 hours to get to students, but we always make meeting with students a top priority.

Parents can also meet with us! The best way to get in touch with us is via email or over the phone. Additionally, we have bookings pages that help us find a common time to meet together.

My child doesn’t need to see a counselor; why would they work with you?

We work with ALL students, regardless of their mental health condition. We seek to build relationships and create connections with every student so that they know they have a safe space and trusted adult they can talk to in the building.

We work with any student in the building that needs support in any area of their life. If they are having a bad day, we are a shoulder to cry on. If they are having a fight with their friend, we are a resource to help them sort it out. If they are struggling with a class, we help them start a conversation with their teacher. No problem is too big or too small, and all of their problems are worth our time.

Help! My child needs counseling!

While we are trained mental health professionals, School Counselors do not provide ongoing therapy services for students during school hours. If you feel your child needs more support, we are happy to provide a list of resources in our community that can help.

How do I know how my child is doing in class?

In Middle School, it is not typical or always feasible for teachers to contact home about all missing work. Most conversations take place between the teacher and the student regarding missing assignments. However, there is a way for the adults in students lives to be aware of progress in classes:

Teachers enter grades WEEKLY (at least) into an online GradeBook through a computer system called Synergy. Parents/Guardians and students can check their grades through the ParentVUE/StudentVUE portal online or via the app. *It is necessary to set up your ParentVUE account on a computer prior to logging into the mobile app*. Unfamiliar with how to use ParentVue? Use this slideshow as a guide the first time you log in.

Help! My child and I are feeling overwhelmed!

If keeping track of multiple classes and assignments for all of these subjects seems overwhelming, you are not alone. Here are some general tips for checking grades and keeping up with classes:

  • Pick one day to set aside time for students and their grown ups to meet about grades. Since teachers typically only update grades one time a week, this will be the best way to track what work has been turned in and it helps to not create daily stress.

  • When there are questions, concerns or confusion around assignments, missing/make-up work, tests/quizzes, due dates, grades or anything else, the student should send that teacher an email explaining this during the grade check time. The teacher then has time to look into this and either email back or talk to the student directly regarding the situation. Many times if communication is not made immediately, it is easy for the student to forget or get busy with other classwork. You can find all of your student’s teacher’s emails in ParentVue or StudentVue.

  • If there is additional assistance a student needs with academics, they can also reach out to us for help.
