This page is called "GT/Extension Groups" because my small groups are comprised of students who have been identified as Gifted in either math or reading as well as students who show that they need the extensions (as group sizes allow).
3rd grade:
In reading, we are working on the root spec- (to look or examine), and we just finished reading a story called “Emily’s Lion,” which we will continue to discuss and write about in the next few weeks.
In math, we’ve been working on a unit called “How Much Does it Cost?” which is focused on money and making change. We are now working on learning to multiply single digit x multi digit numbers.
4th grade:
In reading, we just finished a short story called “Fresh,” which we will continue to discuss in the next couple of weeks, and then write about.
In math, we finished a problem-solving strategy called “Think 1,” and started working on another one called “2 – 10.” We also sprinkle a few problems a week from our Mighty Math Minds competition, which will take place in April. I’m giving them problems from former competitions, so they can get used to the format they take. We've also done some long division, since the problems in our problem-solving strategy packet require division.
5th grade:
In reading, after we finished the story “Charles,” and wrote about it, we started working on Ceasar’s English, learning about roots and stems from Latin. We just finished reading chapter 1 of Ceasar's English and taking notes on new vocabulary words.
In math, we are working on some basic algebra and looking at problems from the Mighty Math Minds competition which will take place in April. I’m also giving them problems from former competitions, so they can get used to the format they take.
