Growth Mindset in Music

Growth vs. Fixed Mindset

The growth vs. fixed mindset theory is a result of decades of research on achievement and success. People with a fixed mindset believe their intelligence or abilities are unchanging traits. They believe they cannot improve their naturally given abilities, and therefore do not put effort into improving. Those with growth mindsets believe their basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and natural ability are just the starting point.

Research shows that as we learn new things, the neurons in our brains are sending messages - as we repeat or practice the new information, those message pathways become stronger and stronger. The STRUGGLE to learn is actually what helps information stick! The proof is in our concerts: look at what our beginning band can do in December compared to our May concerts. See what our 8th grade band can do by the end of their 3rd year! It just takes time and practice and EVERYBODY can do it.

We must reimagine how we view "failure." Learning an instrument is tough stuff - it is asking a lot of our brains and bodies - this is one of the reasons learning music is so valuable! Learning an instrument is linked to intelligence and success in those who participate in music! Failure should be expected- it is a CRUCIAL part of the learning process. We stumble, we struggle and we continue on! We must embrace these bumps in the road, because moving past them will improve our minds, skills, and attitudes.

Teaching students how to develop growth mindset traits, coupled with grit and resilience, has been shown to increase motivation and productivity in the worlds of business, education, sports, and more. Musicians with a growth mindset believe that their skills are developed through devotion to routine training. Learning how to prepare, especially how to deliberately practice the most difficult parts of a musical work, is key to sustained growth.
