Camerata Choir

course description

PA1200 Camerata Choir (Honors)

Camerata Choir is an advanced choir where students can expand their vocal music repertoire, further develop their musicianship, and increase their proficiency in sight singing. Frequent performances are included in the annual schedule of events. Auditions for Camerata are held in late February or early March. All Camerata students must be enrolled in either Concert Choir or A cappella Choir for two academic years; this requirement can be met before admittance into Camerata or concurrently as a member of the Camerata.

Grade: 9-12 by audition

Periods per week: two Z-blocks and one evening

Credit: 1

Auditions for Camerata take place in late February and/or early March. Admittance into Camerata is competitive. Spaces usually go to students whose voices have had time to mature and who have had more experience sight-singing. The best preparation for entry into Camerata is to take a year of BHS Concert Choir. See the Auditions page for more details.

about camerata

The Brookline High School Camerata is made up of approximately 50 students in grades 9-12. Singers are selected by audition and rehearse two days per week before school and one evening per week. Learning to become literate, independent musicians and singers is a major goal of all choral ensembles at Brookline High School. Sight-singing ability is a major requirement for entry into the Camerata.

Repertoire for the group spans all areas of choral literature including works of master composers, spirituals, gospel, music from world cultures and contemporary popular music. The group performs both a cappella and with piano accompaniment and frequently performs with the instrumental ensembles at Brookline High School. The group has produced world premiere recordings of Baroque-era composer Jan Dismas Zelenka’s Dixit Dominus (ZWV 67) as well as Zelenka’s arrangement of Tomaso Ingegnieri’s Dixit Dominus.
