Print the curriculum documents below and use a hightlighter to help identify your "5 Out"—the essential skills and knowledge students must master before moving on— ensure they meet the following criteria:
Endurance: Will students continue to rely on this skill in future grades, subjects, or real-world applications? Does it build a long-term academic foundation?
Leverage: Will mastering this skill benefit students in multiple subject areas? Does it have cross-disciplinary importance?
Necessity: Is this skill absolutely required for students to be successful in the next grade or course? Does it align with key transition points (e.g., elementary to middle school, high school to college/ career)?
TIP: think of this as a 20% need to know - this should meet the 3 criteria above - 80% nice to know
