There is no better first step, but what should you restart first?
The first step is to determine if the problem is your device or your internet connection. If you have one device that is having trouble but other devices that are working, the issue is probably with your device. Restart the device.
If multiple devices are having trouble connecting, the issue is probably with your internet connection. Restart your wireless router and modem.
Remember you need make sure your device restarts. This typically means holding down the power button or selecting the restart option. Closing the lid and opening up is not a restart.
Check the wifi icon on your laptop.
On Windows machines, this will be down in the lower right corner of the screen near the clock. If you are having connectivity issues, you can click on that icon to see if you are indeed connected to a network. You can also right click on the icon and choose ‘troubleshoot problems’ to have Windows try and fix the issue for you.
On Apple machines, the icon is at the top of the screen near the clock. Apple users can also click the icon to make sure they are connected to a network.
On your iPad, open your settings and click on the wifi option. Are you connected to network?
If everything looks normal but your website still will not load, try another website. Maybe the website you are trying to access is having issues or maybe Google is having trouble.

If everything is working, but things are moving slowly, try reloading the page. Also, with the whole family stuck at home watching Netflix, uploading videos to TikTok, and playing online video games, things may move slowly for you. Everyone has a limited amount of bandwidth and you may have to work with your family to prioritize when you are working from home.
Students - please remember that the best way to get help is to ask, not demand. Be careful to manage your stress and help others in your house understand why you need their help. Parents and siblings are also doing important things.
If you determine that no device can connect, you are probably having an issue with your internet provider. There are a multitude of different routers that may be in your home, so we can’t really tell you exactly what to look for. Usually, there will be several lights on any router that indicate whether or not it is functioning properly. Make sure they all look normal. If one of your lights isn't lighting up, it may be an indication that your internet provider or router is having an issue.
Call your Internet Service Provider or ISP. They are going to have specialized tools that will be able to diagnose and resolve your issue.
