Now that you’ve learned how to analyze vital signs, explored the different agents that cause infectious disease, interpreted patient lab results using positive and negative controls, and practiced diagnosing a patient, it’s time to put it all together and be a diagnostic detective!
For this project, you’ll work with a partner to gather the evidence you need to diagnose and treat your patient. You’ll be provided patient vital signs and physical exam notes, but the rest of the information gathering is up to you! You’ll have to figure out what evidence you need and interview your patient to collect this information. Your analysis of this evidence will help you solve the medical case.
Write all information for your patient medical file.
Think about what type of information you need to diagnose this patient. Reflect back on how you solved the medical case in the previous activity to get ideas.
Write questions you need to ask the patient about their symptoms to get more info in your journal.
What type of questions do you need to ask the patient about their behavior?
Record their responses on the patient medical file template.
Decide which illness your patient is suffering from.
Submit your diagnosis to me. The lab has run tests to determine whether your patient was infected with the agent you submitted with your diagnosis. I will give you the laboratory results.
If your diagnosis does not match your patient test results, go back and get any additional information you need and reanalyze your case.
Document your diagnosis in the Diagnosis section of your Patient Medical Case Template.
In the Justification for Diagnosis section of your Patient Medical Case File, support your diagnosis with evidence.
This means explain the reasoning behind how you have made your diagnosis and the process through which you went.
Consider the treatment. What treatment would you recommend for this patient and why?
What were some of the challenges you experienced while diagnosing your patient?
How did you resolve them?
What behaviors positively impacted your team’s effectiveness in diagnosing your patient?
What behaviors negatively impacted your team’s effectiveness in diagnosing your patient?
How can group collaboration be improved for next time?
