Street Vet Work is about meeting pet families where they are, both geographically and emotionally, to provide compassionate, practical veterinary care.
Project Street Vet partners closely with human service organizations to reach pet families in places they already trust, including parks, interim housing sites, and outdoor public spaces. These partnerships help ensure safety, coordination, and continuity of care, while allowing veterinary teams to focus on medical support rather than logistics.
Most PSV street veterinarians often work directly out of their vehicle, using medical supplies and equipment provided by PSV. Care is designed to be efficient and focused on preventative medicine and common treatable conditions. Advanced diagnostics and procedures are not expected in the field; cases requiring further workup or treatment are referred through PSV’s case management and partner hospital network.
Veterinarians are not working alone. Each outreach team is supported by volunteers, typically including a veterinary assistant to help with restraint and treatments, and a scribe who completes medical records. This allows the veterinarian to focus on patient care and client communication while ensuring accurate documentation and follow-up.
Street Vet Work is flexible, impactful, and deeply human. Whether participating occasionally or regularly, veterinarians play a vital role in reducing barriers to care, strengthening trust within the community, and supporting the powerful bond between people and their pets.
