Screencastify: Free Chrome Extension (Paid for version available also)

Screencastify is a chrome extension which sits in your browser (at the top right hand side of the screen generally) and can be accessed when you are on any webpage. By clicking on the extension icon you can choose how much of your screen you'd like to record and then hit the record button to begin your explainer video. It's an ideal way to create short videos to share with students to explain concepts or for students to share with their teachers to explain their online work. The free version of this digital tool is an ideal place to start and may well be plenty to suit your needs in creating short explainer videos (less than 5 mins). Videos can be downloaded to desktop or shared directly via Google Drive, Google Classroom or YouTube.

Using Your Device's In-Built Features

Devices generally have the in-built ability to record the screen. This can be an easy and effective way to create your own screencasts. See below for the guidelines for your device.


Windows 10

  • Press WINDOWS+G to open the Game bar. (If required, select the “Yes, this is a game.” check box).

  • Press the 'Start/Stop Recording' button to start and stop a screen recording.

  • Use the 'Turn Microphone On/Off' button to enable narration.
