Distance Learning

Using digital storytelling to connect with and engage learners can be an effective approach to teaching, learning and assessment when engaging in models of blended learning, for example the flipped classroom, or when employing distance learning in times of need, eg. school closure.

The below are just some of the ways in which digital storytelling can aid teachers and learners in such cases:

  • Teachers can create short instructional videos (screencasts, adobe spark videos) to introduce topics to their pupils/ students or provide more information regarding curricular concepts.

  • Teachers may decide to create and share short instructional podcasts with their pupils/ students to support their learning at home.

  • Teachers may set their learners assignments which involve them creating short videos or animations to showcase their learning on a particular topic/ theme.

  • Learners, whilst working from home, can create their own short digital stories (screencasts, adobe spark videos) to explore curricular topics and showcase their learning.

  • In developing a sense of digital citizenship amongst their pupils/ students, teachers can highlight the need to use copyright-free materials in the creation of digital projects and so the copyright section of this site will be useful in providing pupils/ students with a range of websites that be used to source copyright free imagery and copyright-free sound

The Professional Development Service for Teachers (PDST) Digital Technologies team have created a YouTube channel which hosts a wide range of short instructional videos (screencasts) regarding how to use various digital tools that are suitable for distance learning. Some of these resources have been highlighted throughout this website, with additional tools featuring on the YouTube which are also useful for digital storytelling purposes.
