History: Great Explorers
Year 2 has officially packed their bags and set off on a journey through time! We are diving into our Great Explorers topic, uncovering the stories of the brave men and women who helped map our world.
From the Antarctic to outer space, we are looking at how these pioneers changed history. We’ve been busy comparing explorers from the past with those of the present, asking ourselves: “What qualities do you need to be a great explorer?”
Science: Plants
Year 2 has officially started our exciting new topic on Plants.
To help us understand the anatomy of a plant, we worked hard to build their very own 3D models. By "growing" our own versions out of craft materials, we were able to identify and label the four key parts that keep a plant healthy and strong: the roots, stem, flower and leaves.
Now that we know what makes up a plant, we’ll be moving on to investigate exactly what a seed needs to germinate and grow. We are excited to share our own plant growing updates soon!
British Science Week!
This week, we have celebrated British Science Week. The children have dived straight into research, questioning and investigating all things science!!
Legends of Science
We began our journey by looking at the legends of the scientific world. We explored the life-saving discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming and followed in the footsteps of Sir David Attenborough, learning how observation and passion can help protect our planet. These stories have inspired the children to see themselves as the scientists of the future.
The Wonder Wall
Our classroom now features a massive "Wonder Wall," a space dedicated to the children’s curiosity. It is currently overflowing with brilliant questions that the children want to investigate. Throughout the week, we’ve been picking these "wonders" to explore, ensuring that our learning is led by the children’s own investagative minds.
One of our highlights was the "Will it Float?" experiment. The children were tasked with a mission to make their carrot float. The children drew on their prior learning about waterproof and absorbent materials to make their predictions. There was fantastic teamwork as they wrapped, tucked, and tied different materials to their carrots before the big reveal in the water tray. We discovered that even a heavy carrot can stay afloat if we choose the right material to give it a little life jacket!
Planting
This week, it was time to start our planting experiment. Each child planted their own seed, but we’ve given them all very different homes. We are testing four different conditions: some seeds are soaking up the sun rays, others are hiding in the dark, some are trying to grow without water, and others are living in a humid environment to see how extra moisture can effect the growth. We can’t wait to observe the changes, record our measurements, and find out which seeds grow the tallest.
