Finance
There are lots of jobs in finance that let you work with numbers: Accountants, Financial Advisors, Bookkeepers, Insurance Agents and Cryptocurrency Traders benefit from strong maths skills.
Data Science
Data Analysts, Statisticians, Demographers, and even Developers all need to have strong maths skills to excel in their work.
Medicine
Use your maths skills as a Doctor, Nurse, Pharmacist, or Clinical Researcher to ensure that patients get the right treatments and doses.
These are just some of the pathways you could explore!
Scope:
Mathematics is the study of function and pattern in number, logic, space and structure, and of randomness, chance, variability, and uncertainty in data and events. It is both a framework for thinking and a means of symbolic communication that is powerful, logical, concise and precise. Mathematics also provides a means by which people can understand and manage human and natural aspects of the world and interrelationships between these. Essential mathematical activities include conjecturing, hypothesising and problem-posing; estimating, calculating, computing and constructing; abstracting, proving, refuting and inferring; applying, investigating, modelling and problem-solving.
Rational:
This study is designed to provide access to worthwhile and challenging mathematical learning in a way which takes into account the interests, needs, dispositions and aspirations of a wide range of students, and introduces them to key aspects of the discipline and its applications. It is also designed to promote students’ awareness of the importance of mathematics in everyday life in a technological society and globalised world, and to develop confidence and the disposition to make effective use of mathematical concepts, processes and skills in practical and theoretical contexts.
VCE VM Numeracy equips students with practical maths skills for everyday life, work, and further study. Through real-world applications, they build confidence in number operations, measurement, data analysis, and problem-solving. The course develops both foundational and advanced skills, from working with fractions and percentages to using spreadsheets and mathematical software for complex calculations and decision-making.
Students learn to navigate with maps, interpret data and graphs, manage financial calculations, and apply mathematical thinking to workplace scenarios, building the numerical confidence and analytical skills that employers value. By connecting mathematics directly to practical situations students will encounter in their chosen careers and daily lives, this subject provides a strong foundation for apprenticeships, traineeships, further study, or direct entry into the workforce where mathematical literacy is increasingly essential.
IB DP Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is designed for students who enjoy exploring abstract mathematics and developing analytical thinking. With a focus on mathematical theory, structure, and proof, the course encourages students to construct and communicate rigorous arguments and solve both abstract and contextual problems. Offered at both Standard and Higher Levels, it prepares students for further study in mathematics and related fields. The internal assessment fosters independent inquiry and deeper engagement with mathematical concepts.
