Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.

Being the first in my family to attend a four-year university, I lacked a lot of guidance. Although I am beyond grateful for everything my parents have been able to provide for me, I never had a support system when it comes to education. Then, my friend advised me to join a class called AVID. At first, I was very hesitant because I felt like the class wasn’t meant for me. I also felt afraid because I would be joining mid-year, whereas everybody else has already joined the class when they were underclassmen. All of that anxious feeling went away as soon as joined the class. Not only did AVID provided me with guidance I needed, but it has brought me a lot more than expected. Within the borders of the classroom, there is a community of people striving towards a common goal. In AVID, everyone is creating relationships and achieving happiness, not only through personal success but through the successes of others. Every AVID student has a different background, yet, we are still able to support each other. Which makes me feel very at ease and even content. Within these walls, you not only learn about getting into college but also the process of planning out your life during college. There were countless memories that were made from a lot of AVID events. From an overnight college trip to the endless fundraisers, AVID has truly made my high school experience ten times better. I furthered my interest in the classroom when I joined AVID Club, where I was able to grow as a leader. I had the honor of working on the council team as communications. I was able to utilize the skill I have previously developed to organize events, plan fundraisers and expand my communication skills. The endless opportunities AVID have provided me gave me plenty of experience to my future. Which all had made me realize that I want to further these experience by taking on a business major.

What would you say is your greatest talent or skill? How have you developed and demonstrated that talent over time?

During my youth, prior to my teenage years, I was an extremely unorganized individual. My room was a mess, my binders for school were nonexistent, and my backpack was filled with crumpled papers and gum wrappers I did not care to manage. Upon entering 7th grade, my brother had been involved in a college preparatory school program called AVID, Advance Via Individual Determination. He encouraged me to join, for he knew I desperately needed guidance from the teachers who shaped him into a better organized student. On the first day of instruction, our teacher inspected all of her students' backpacks. This endeavor of hers, led to the most embarrassing event of my life in school. She saw the hurricane which had hit my unorganized bag, grabbed it, and emptied the contents on my desk for all my peers to see. I was a shy kid and this experience woke me up like no other nightmare had ever done. From that day on, I made sure the probability of that event occurring again, would never become possible. My attention to organizational detail became immaculate. As the years progressed, my average course grades improved drastically from my newfound and developing organizational skills. I owed it all to AVID.

Upon graduating high school, I did not want the valued lessons I learned from the program to be for nothing. Sure they benefited me tremendously, but I felt like there was an outstanding moral debt that needed to be paid back. This influenced me to reach out to my High School AVID teacher and ask for a job as a tutor for students in the course. Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, I partake in the course's goal of guiding students through problems and difficulties they face in their respective high school courses. I thoroughly enjoy reflecting on my experiences when I was in their shoes, to motivate and encourage them to excel in all of their endeavors. I was extremely fortunate for having tutors and teachers in the program which genuinely cared for my success. By becoming a tutor, I hope to recycle my cherished past experiences onto the new generations to come; for as long as my schedule may allow.
