The purpose of the course is found in the name – Advancement Via Individual Determination. AVID 1/2 and 3/4 are designed to help cultivate the most advanced high school students, while AVID 5/6, and 7/8 focus more on the preparation of the college student. All levels are guided by the direction of college acceptance and success. All courses involve substantial reading and writing, preparation for external exams, such as Advanced Placement and SAT, Socratic seminars, in addition to standard AVID curriculum, such as tutorials and organizational checks. All students have access to tutors and mentors to help students reach their highest potential in and out of the classroom.
General Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes:
Complete A-G requirements while maintaining good citizenship and attendance in all classes - all AVID levels earn a G-credit
Complete college applications and scholarships/financial aid packages, as appropriate by grade level
Demonstrate analytical writing in a variety of discourse modes
Improve oral communication skills through a variety of means, including, but not limited to, presentations, debates, tutorials, and Socratic seminar
Learn to evaluate their own writing, using rubrics and scoring guides
Prepare for college entrance and placement exams, as appropriate by grade level
Prepare for/sit for an external exam(s)
Select a college area of study which leads to an anticipated career
Complete and present a digital portfolio of work
