Describe how you have taken advantage of a significant educational opportunity or worked to overcome an educational barrier you have faced.
Being the first in my family to attend a four-year university, I lacked a lot of guidance. Although I am beyond grateful for everything my parents have been able to provide for me, I never had a support system when it comes to education. Then, my friend advised me to join a class called AVID. At first, I was very hesitant because I felt like the class wasn’t meant for me. I also felt afraid because I would be joining mid-year, whereas everybody else has already joined the class when they were underclassmen. All of that anxious feeling went away as soon as joined the class. Not only did AVID provided me with guidance I needed, but it has brought me a lot more than expected. Within the borders of the classroom, there is a community of people striving towards a common goal. In AVID, everyone is creating relationships and achieving happiness, not only through personal success but through the successes of others. Every AVID student has a different background, yet, we are still able to support each other. Which makes me feel very at ease and even content. Within these walls, you not only learn about getting into college but also the process of planning out your life during college. There were countless memories that were made from a lot of AVID events. From an overnight college trip to the endless fundraisers, AVID has truly made my high school experience ten times better. I furthered my interest in the classroom when I joined AVID Club, where I was able to grow as a leader. I had the honor of working on the council team as communications. I was able to utilize the skill I have previously developed to organize events, plan fundraisers and expand my communication skills. The endless opportunities AVID have provided me gave me plenty of experience to my future. Which all had made me realize that I want to further these experience by taking on a business major.
