Book an in-person field trip for Sue-Meg State Park

In-Person field trips are available at Sue-Meg State Park for both guided and self-guided field trips. See the calendar below for details:

Guided Field Trips

Join us for a 2-3 hour guided field trip activity at Sue-meg State Park! During this field trip experience, students will explore the life and significance of a coastal and cultural keystone species, the red abalone through the lenses of coastal kelp forest ecology and Indigenous Yurok culture. Students will participate in hands on learning activities, ecological modeling games, and be immersed in rich cultural storytelling. Our program aims to encourage students to make connections between human communities and the marine ecosystems upon which they depend. Field trips are facilitated at Red Alder Group Campground with rotating activities to Sumeg Village. We hope to highlight the cultural and ecological significance of ocean health and inspire students to care for and protect our world's ocean.  

Upon arrival, students will be split into groups and rotate through the following activities: 

• Kelp Forest Ecology: Interpreter Angie will lead students through an experiential activity exploring kelp forest ecology, focusing specifically on the impact to abalone along the north coast. This activity will highlight both the human and environmental impact on this unique environment. Through this experience, we hope students discover the value of California's Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). 

• Cultural Connections to the Sea: Interpreter Maiya, recent recipient of the NAEE 30 under 30 award, will share her first-person knowledge of Yurok culture and the connection to this place since time immemorial. Students will explore the significance of abalone for traditional ceremony, regalia, and stories. 

This field trip will be hosted entirely outdoors, with some opportunities to sit under covered shelter if necessary. All attendees should be prepared for several short trail walks through the woods.

Field Trips typically take 2-3 hours to complete. This field trip can accommodate a maximum of 50 students. The required adult to student ratio is 1:10. 

Self-Guided Field Trips

Self Guided Field Trips are facilitated independently by K-12 educators, chaperones, and youth program leaders without the support of California State Park Staff.  During your field trip, you are more than welcome to explore the park whilst following established park rules.  Upon completion of your field trip reservation, you will receive a tentative confirmation email with information on how to prepare for and reflect on your in-person field trip. 

During your field trip, we recommend that you choose one of the following experiences to guide your student learning during their visit: 

• Redwood EdVenture Quest at Sue-meg State Park (formerly called Patrick’s Point State Park)

• Use the iNaturalist app

• Use the Seek app (by iNaturalist)

• Nature / Field Journaling
