The main topics covered in our December curriculum for grade one students are body parts and weather. In grade 1, students were introduced to the vocabulary for nine parts of the body and six weather words through songs, games and other activities. Grade 2 students reviewed the body parts they learned in first grade and increased their vocabulary by adding seven new words! They practiced using their vocabulary with songs, games, speaking and writing activities. Second graders also learned color words. The third grade curriculum for body parts includes the vocabulary for expressing that a part of the body hurts.
After reviewing the vocabulary for parts of the body, students participated in a fun doctor-patient role play activity. Third grade students also enjoyed learning how to tell time in Chinese. Finally, our fourth graders learned new topics about clothing and shopping. First, they were introduced to new vocabulary words about clothing. Students used the vocabulary they learned from previous years to help them describe articles of clothing. We added sentence patterns and additional key words to help students shop for clothes. Student role played, engaged in partner speaking activities and writing activities.
The curriculum for the entire month of January in grades one through four is dedicated to the most important holiday in Chinese culture: Chinese New Year. Students learn that Chinese New Year is based on the lunar calendar and therefore falls on a different day every year. Students in grades three and four delved into this concept more in depth and compared how this important holiday is celebrated in Korea and other Asian countries. All of our students learn the traditions, customs and stories about Chinese New Year through experiences that leave a lasting impression.
The story of the monster named Nian teaches students why red is the primary color used for Chinese New Year celebrations. Making red colored projects reinforces this concept. Students learned about the tradition of giving the ‘hongbao’ by receiving a red envelope with a lucky penny from their teacher. The story of the Twelve Zodiac Animals teaches students the names of the animals and that every year has an animal symbol. Students enjoyed learning what animal year they and their family members are born. We also spent time practicing popular Chinese New Year greetings and songs.
The culmination of our unit is the fabulous Chinese New Year parade held in each of our four elementary schools. During our parades students from each fourth grade class proudly marched through the hallways carrying dragons, lions, drums, ribbons, and fans. All other students lined the hallways and enjoyed as the parade went by, bringing good fortune to all!
School objects and places in the school are the first grade curriculum topics for this month. Students made Valentine’s Day projects and learned how to say “I love you” in Chinese. Second grade students learned the Chinese names of different community places. We also discuss the importance of Chinatown communities in America. This unit in Chinese class supported the lessons that were taught to students in their Social Studies unit about community. For Valentine’s Day, second graders learned a short poem to present to their family members.
Students in third grade learned about the rooms in a house. After learning vocabulary and sentence patterns, students designed a house for which they used for speaking activities with a partner. Third graders also enjoyed learning about the Monkey King, a popular fictional character in China. The topics for fourth grade students in February are feeling words and community helpers. Students practiced using vocabulary in sentences to express how they feel. Students enjoyed a fun Lego movie EdPuzzle and online word searches to further explore these topics.
