"Plainview" Across the Country!
By, Ethan Rish, Gavin Lichtenthal, and Marcus Li
Plainview Long Island is the town we know and love. But what if I told you that there are many Plainviews nationwide? Let’s talk about some of them now!
Let’s start with the Plainview we know and love! One fact you may not know about Plainview, New York is that Plainview is a farming town known for growing cucumbers for the humongous Heinz pickle factories. These factories are located in Farmingdale and Hicksville in the Plainview Old-Bethpage Chamber of Commerce, it says,” A small kettle pond fed by a freshwater spring at the edge of the Hempstead Plains was the basis of Plainview’s origins. It was an indentation in the ground left behind by retreating glaciers.
The pond – just northeast of the modern-day intersection of Old Country and Manetto Hill Roads – became a holy site for Native Americans across Long Island, who valued rare sources of freshwater. They named the pond Moscopas, meaning “hole of dirt and water”, and the Manetto, a word for “god”. Indians hunted in the area, often after praying at the foot of Manetto Hill.
Hempstead settler Robert Williams, originally of Wales, purchased land west of Moscopas from the Matinecocks in 1648. However, the major European land purchase was in 1695 when Thomas Powell’s Bethpage Purchase extended north to Moscopas. A tiny farming community formed near the pond, taking the name Manetto Hill. It remained isolated and insignificant for more than a century.” From modern times we know that Plainview, N.Y. is an interesting and fun place to live.
Our second Plainview is Plainview Texas! Plainview Texas has many very cool things! In the Encyclopedia Britannica, “The site was surveyed in 1887 by Z.T. Maxwell and E.L. Lowe, who named it Plainview because of the unbroken view to the horizon. The settlement remained a trading post for cattlemen until the railroad arrived in 1907 when it was incorporated as a city. One is the Plainview Point Monument. It marks where the first arrowhead was discovered. Since then, many different arrowheads have been found. That is Plainview Texas.
Did you know that there is a USS Plainview named after Plainview, New York, and Plainview, Texas? The USS Plainview was, in its time, the largest hydrofoil. USS Plainview also was the Navy’s first hydrofoil research ship.
Our next Plainview is Plainview Nebraska. Plainview Nebraska’s achievement is getting the movie “Nebraska” to take place there. On the website, it says, “Plainview is home to 1,282 people in Pierce County, Nebraska, and offers nearly everything residents could want from amenities and health care to education and activities.” That shows that Plainview Nebraska is a very interesting town.
These are only a couple of Plainviews across the United States.
