March is being observed as Fire Prevention Month here in the Philippines—a perfect time to discuss and raise awareness about the causes, hazards, and dangers of fire. The month of March was declared "Fire Prevention Month" or "Burn Prevention Month" by Proclamation No. 115-A, signed by then-President Ferdinand E. Marcos, and Proclamation No. 360 in 1986.
According to the measure, the fire prevention month campaign promotes "safety consciousness among our people every day of the year as a positive preventive approach to a problem that can be solved by more caution, vigilance, sobriety, common sense, and respect for the law." Temperatures and humidity begin to rise in March, with the hot, dry weather contributing to an increase in reported fires across the country.
March is one of the hottest months of the year, and it marks the start of the Philippine summer season. According to data from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), it is also the month with the most alarming fire incidents in the country. (PRRI-Philippine Rubber Research Institute, 2023)
In line with these, PNU Mindanao is supporting this campaign through the First Safety Lecture in collaboration with the Municipality of Prosperidad's Bureau of Fire Protection.
PNU-Min Faculty, SG strengthens collaboration on "libreng tubig para kay PNUAN" campaign
To address concerns about potable water, a ceremonial ribbon cutting led by key officials and Student Government Officers was conducted on the 24th of January at the Philippine Normal University-Mindanao campus for the launching of a drinking fountain and the "no use of plastic" campaign.
During the launching, they were able to showcase the two drinking fountains that costs ₱47,000.00 each. It is now available and ready to use within the campus. This campaign, called "Libreng tubig para kay PNUan," was realized through the leadership of two former SG presidents, Hon. Alexis Q. Sebote and Hon. Don Bern King Virtudazo, current vice president for external affairs.
"The launching of drinking fountain and no use of plastic campaign marks the foundation of a more responsive, caring, and environment friendly PNUan," said Ralph B. Original, SG President, and PNUNUSG Vice Chairman for Academic. Also, this campaign was aligned with the activities conducted by the university that promote and practice a greener community, such as tree planting and Clean as You Go (CLAYGO).
Further, Mr. Virtudazo explained that the fountain has four stages of purification to ensure its safety with UV-LED water disinfection, and can produce cold water.
"This campaign benefits the entire PNU community as it contributes to the development of our campus since potable water was one of the concerns of our students," stated Prof. Corenelio L. Labao, Jr., Director of Finance and Administration.
