JOURNAL ENTRIES
This section is about the journal entries of the author. It is composed of the author's reflection and learnings throughout her practice teaching.
OCTOBER 2021
For this week, the PATNURO 2021-2022 happened. We get to refresh our learnings in our professional education courses through the series of the PATNURO. We have to keep in mind and hear the learnings from the PATNURO sessions as we start another milestone on our college journey a pre-service teachers. Various topics were discussed to help us in our practice teaching.
This week, our pinning ceremony was held. This signifies the start of our journey as practice teachers 2. The ceremony was even more significant and memorable as the parents were also part of the program. This further fueled my passion to do my best.
Today, our PT02 supervisor held a meeting to discuss the important files we need to accomplish for our CBAR. Having a meeting with our supervisor puts me at ease knowing that we have someone we can go to when we have queries regarding our concerns for our CBAR and PT02 matters. This made me also realize to not miss any meetings with our supervisor to stay updated on the latest announcements.
My groupmates and I talked about our plans for our CBAR proposal. We came to an agreement to take advantage of the week to process and work on our CBAR while we're still not being deployed to our assigned school. Making use of the spare time we have waiting to work on our school tasks gives a sense of fulfillment to me as we make ourselves productive.
I get to observe another class in grade 2 at ITL as we wait for an update about our deployment in the school assigned to us. During the ITL class observation and post-conference, I get to learn by the practices of some practice teachers that I can also use in my class. From the feedbacks of the other practice teachers as well as our PT0S supervisor, I get to take note of the do’s and don’ts in teaching and what things can be further improved on the Teacher’s part.
Today, I attended the ESPS orientation. During the orientation, I get to know some basic information about the teachings at ESPS specifically in the subject of AP where I was assigned. My cooperating teacher (CT) presented a sample class schedule and the RISE and SOAR activity was explained briefly. Also, I had a CBAR meeting with my groupmates to discuss our plans for our CBAR. Having constant meetings is helpful to keep track of the task needed to be done for our CBAR.
Today, I had a meeting with the two CTs of ESPS assigned in the AP department, together with my co-practice teacher. During our meeting, the discussed the curriculum map (CMAP), schedule of learning activities (SLA), their class schedule, the RISE and SOAR, and many more matters about the basic information in teaching in ESPS. Having the presentation gave an overview of what will it be like when teaching in a private catholic school.
For this week, I prioritized doing the assigned task to me for our group’s CBAR. I’ve gathered related articles and did a journal analysis in order to help me in doing the RRL.
NOVEMBER 2021
During the wellness break of the university, I did my curriculum map (CMAP) and schedule of learning activities (SLA). I really allotted my whole week doing this since next week is my preparation time in making the instructional materials.
In the process of making the CMAP and SLA, everything was not easy. It is a challenge to think of various and diverse activities on each topic. Since the topic of Grade 1 AP for the 2nd quarter is all about Family, I need to make sure that I don’t cross the line in discussing other related topics to one another to ensure that there will be no repetition of topics to be discussed.
What helped me finish the CMAP and SLA in a week is by sticking to my plans (my to-do list) each day in order to prevent procrastination. This routine absolutely helped me in finishing the task. Also, having various resource books aided me in thinking about some activities which I adopted to my CMAP.
On my 1st day of class observation, I noticed that most of the students are actively participating in the class discussion. This made me happy for this signaled that there will be no dull moments in the class when students were as active as they are.
Also, I observed that routines and the implementation of class rules should be further intensified or be part of the preliminaries of the class before the lesson proper so that the Teacher doesn’t need to repeatedly tell to the class the dos and don’ts during an online class.
For the 2nd day of class observation. My CT used the Powerpoint presentation that I made and it makes me feel proud of my output. As I observe, it is really a great challenge to be conscious of the time since some students remind the Teacher of the remaining time left in the class.
Today, I was invited to attend the homeroom meeting of Grade 1-Hope. I was introduced by my CT to the parents as a practice teacher.
Meetings such as this one are important to build the school and family relationship and connection. I commend that the ESPS provided a short talk about parenting styles during the new normal in order to educate the parents.
I’m really grateful to our PT02 supervisor for being hands-on in supervising us. The workload that we have to do for PT02 is already tiring, but, somehow it feels lighter when we have meetings with Prof. Nina. The things she discussed with us during our consultation were important and she thoroughly explained them to us.
I had a meeting with my CBAR groupmates. During our meeting, we discussed the changes that we will do to our CBAR proposal. There are parts where we are still uncertain of what we will do specifically on what will be the focus of our action research. I’m looking forward that we’ll be able to come up with a clear direction for our CBAR in order to finish it throughout our term 1.
Today, I was invited to the meeting of Araling Panlipunan Teachers as they discuss the Major Performance Task (PETA) of students from grades 1 to 4. I’m happy to be able to share the plan that I have for the PETA of grade 1 as well as they consider using the CMAP we made (practice teachers) for the next school year.
Also, today, I started doing my PT02 journal since I have so many backlogs in my PT02 journal. I don’t want to procrastinate on this requirement at the end day of our PT02 that’s why it’s better to do this daily than to do this in one sitting.
Today is my first day of teaching in grade 1. The topic I discussed today is about ‘Mga Uri ng Pamilya’. As I teach today, my CT told me a few reminders to say during the SOAR session of grade 1 which is to let the students turn off their camera when they are doing a book activity. I’m also fluttered to the comment of my CT to try applying at their school since I’m already a graduating student. This made me realize that I did a good job for today which further motivated me to do my best during my PT02.
Aside from the commendable remarks of my CT, I also evaluated my teaching performance. There are still things that I need to improve such as my way of speaking since I stutter sometimes. Also, I have to keep in mind to make my learning approach more student-centered so that my students will be more engaged in my class.
Today is my 2nd day of teaching. I facilitated 2 RISE sessions and 1 SOAR session in grade 1. I did a few mistakes during my RISE class at Grade 1-Faith where I announced that they will have a short quiz on Wednesday and that was a mistake because their schedule of short quiz is on Tuesday next week. The short quiz on Wednesday is for the grade 1 charity and hope.
With this, I told myself to double-check the class schedule. I got confused about their RISE and SOAR session. I’m planning to apologize to the class of grade 1 faith and to their parents at our next meeting to clear the announcement I made. I’m also grateful to my CT since He intervene ad corrected the announcement I said about the schedule of the short quiz.
Summarizing this day, there are things that I have to be mindful of and I have to further improve my speaking ability since I can’t help to take a pause and stutter sometimes as I speak during the class.
Today is my 3rd day of teaching in grade 1. I helped my CT in facilitating their first quiz. I did the review part of the part two topics while my CT demonstrated how they will take the quiz on their school’s LMS.
As my CT announced the scores of the students from the quiz. I’m happy that the majority of them got a high score, but there are also students who get a score below 5 which made me think of what part or item(s) they got most of the incorrect answers so that I can review those parts.
Today, I only had two classes. In my first class, I facilitated the SOAR session of grade 1 Charity. During the class, I had a network interruption and thankfully my CT helped me during the unexpected interruption.
It’s good that I had a data connection on my phone and I was able to return immediately to our online class.
Also, I facilitated the review part for grade 1-Faith before they answer their first short quiz in AP. I’m happy that I’m able to talk and build rapport with the students with the remaining time after they take their short quiz.
I also had a group meeting with my CBAR groupmates as we revise our cbar proposal.
Today is my 5th-day teaching. In my presentation, I used a Coco Disney movie theme and I observed that my students are more engaged in our class as I used a theme in my presentation. Also, it’s been a challenge for me to call everyone in the class. Most of them want to recite in the class that’s why I remind them of our class rule to wait for their turn as I will be calling their name.
My groupmates and I also had a cbar consultation with our PT02 Supervisor and it greatly helped us to make things clear for our cbar’s direction and her feedback to our work is very helpful to improve our cbar.
Today is my 6th day of Teaching. For this day, I had some trouble with my internet connection that’s why my CT is the one who continues the part where I left off in the middle of the class. I am really frustrated in my for my today’s teaching performance due to my internet connection problem and I am grateful for the support and understanding of my CT since such instances are beyond one’s control.
Today is my 7th day of Teaching and I am excited to teach today since the topic that I will discuss is the one that I will use for my pre-final demo this Thursday. I am confident in the content, lesson flow, and activities that I have prepared.
However, just like yesterday, I still don’t have a stable internet connection which made me frustrated again since I was not able to deliver and teach properly in the class. I keep refreshing my device and my students and CT says my connection was choppy. Which made my CT be the one to teach in the class instead of me.
I keep apologizing to my CT because of my situation and I am grateful that he is understanding and helped me in facilitating today’s class.
Today is my 8th day of Teaching. I had two classes for this day. During my first class, I experience an unstable connection that’s why I used my phone instead to facilitate the class. Thankfully, everything went well compared to yesterday’s struggle in connection.
For my second class, my connection was back ad I was able to open my camera and present my ppt. During my 2nd class, I was happy that the G1-Charity was very participative and some of them wants to be called in recitation saying to me that they were not called during the questions I asked.
I’m happy for my today’s performance and I hope that my pre-final demo tomorrow will be a good one. I hope I won’t experience any connection interruption tomorrow.
Today is my 9th day of Teaching and I held my pre-final demonstration teaching. I’m grateful for the support my cooperating teacher gives and as well to the participative class of G1-Faith for today.
I’m looking forward to the feedback that my CT and Supervisor will give from my teaching performance.
Today is my 10th day of Teaching and I had two classes for today. Preparing my presentations ahead of time is a great help to make me feel at ease and to be prepared to teach in my class.
As I teach today, a thought came across my mind on why some of the students repeatedly ask for the instructions of their seatwork and book activity. Perhaps I should think of other ways on how to give instructions to my students.
Today, we don’t have any classes due to the implementation of the 3-day National Vaccination Day. That’s why our group worked on our CBAR’s letter for validators. Our Supervisor gave her feedbacks in our letter and we immediately edited our letter so that we can send the letter to the target validators within the week. Even doing the letters for research entails a lot of work and process before it can be approved.
DECEMBER 2021
Today, our CBAR group finalized the letters to be sent to our validators, and after the approval and go signal of our PT02 Supervisor, we’re finally able to send our letter to the validators. Doing research entails a lot of work and effort. Even if we're just working on a letter, it surely takes some time and revisions. It can be tiring at times doing the process of research but, I’m still happy that I’ve been through this step-by-step process for I learned a lot during this time. I hope that my interest in making research will still burn even after some years.
Today is my 11th day of teaching. I had a SOAR class for today in which we had the topic of Family tree. I’m glad that some of my students are very participative during class discussions. However, I have to continuously remind some of them of our class rules since some students keep answering even if it’s not their turn to answer. Which made me think that I have to further emphasize our class rule to keep our class in order. With regards to our group’s CBAR, we adopted a validation tool from Mr. Oducado in Researchgate. We’re fortunate for he replies immediately to our request to use his research validation tool.
Today is my 12th day of teaching. I had two classes for today. The topic we had for today was Family Tree and Mahahalagang Pangyayari sa Pamilya.
Preparing my slides ahead of time is such a convenience to me to feel at ease days before my class.
Also, as I observed, making my presentation pleasing to the eyes of my students engages them more in our class. Which motivates and inspires me to make my slides presentable to them. I put much effort into my slides since, in today’s mode of online learning, slides are the primary instructional materials being used
Today is my 13th day of teaching. I had three classes for this day. For my 1st class, I miss looked my schedule in which I thought the start of my class is 9:40 am but it was 8:40 am rather. My CT called me and I was reminded of the class schedule.
With this, I have to always double-check my schedule so that such instances will not happen again. I almost became the reason for the class to start late. Also, today, our research questionnaire validators sent to us their feedbacks about our questionnaire. Our group conducted a meeting to modify right away our questionnaire so that we can conduct our data gathering this week or next week.
Today is my pre-final demo teaching and I’m happy that my Supervisor was able to attend it and I’m thankful for the support that my CT gave me. The students were engaged and took part actively during my pre-final demo which made the whole session lively and engaging.
This is only the 1st demo and there is one more to go. I have to make my final demo much better than this one and that is a challenge to me.
Today was supposed to be my final demonstration teaching. But unfortunately, my Supervisor was not able to attend my class. I had a co-practice teacher who had the same schedule of final demo and I think that was the reason why my Supervisor was not able to observe in my class. I was quite down after knowing this but, I know I have to be patient and understanding of the situation.
With this, I thought that maybe it is an opportunity for me to prepare more for my final demonstration teaching. I’m also grateful for the support my CT gave me. He truly believes in me which further motivated me to do my best.
Today, the online Christmas party of grade 1 Hope was held via google meet. I’m happy to be part of their Christmas party even though the party’s setup was virtual.
My CT and I prepared various games for the Christmas party. The students were all engaged and participative as we play the games which made it fun and memorable.
After the games, we asked the students to write their top 3 wishes for this Christmas and some of them shared in the class on what they have written in their papers.
As they finished writing their wishes, we all eat together with the meals brought and prepared by the guardians of the students. I was touched by some students' generosity as they show in the camera the food they want to share with us, their Teachers. Overall, it was a fun and memorable Christmas party. I am happy to be part of it.
Today, we had a session in PNU-ITL where the art of creating an e-portfolio was discussed. In this session, I got an idea of how I will prepare and make my professional e-portfolio. It’s not just about stacking some pictures and giving it some captions, it’s more than that. During this session, I was inspired by the e-portfolio presented by the PNU alumna. Making an e-portfolio takes time and entails various details. It will be better to start doing it little by little so that I will not be overwhelmed when the due for this will be announced.
JANUARY 2022
Today, our group had a meeting to update our progress in doing the CBAR. In the meeting, we decided whether to extend our data gathering since only 3 respondents answered our google form questionnaire, which is far from our target number of respondents which is 5-10 people at least.
But, due to time constraints and taking into consideration our CBAR schedule of activities, we decided to forego our data gathering so that we could finish our CBAR on time.
I may not be satisfied with our CBAR data gathering but, I’ve learned a lot doing this research and I think, that is one of the goals of us practice teachers in doing the CBAR. For us to be familiar with doing the research process and developing our love and interest to do further research even after completing this PT02 requirement.
Today is the resumption of classes of ESPS after the Christmas break and I had two classes for today where I taught in G1-Hope and G1-Charity. In my first class, I had a mistake where I had an extra 11 minutes before the time. I thought that their class will end at 8:30 am. But, it was 8:40 am. I have to be mindful of the time with this experience I had today. Thankfully, for the remaining 11 minutes, my CT told me to remind the students of the tasks that they need to pass in their LMS, that’s why the remaining time was still utilized.
Today marks my last day of teaching and service at Espiritu Santo Parochial School. Throughout my PT02 journey at this school is significant to me for I experienced how to teach in a private school.
Though it felt like everything that happened was a flash for it’s been only a week ago since I started teaching at the grade 1 class, but, I’ve learned a lot and packed a ton of experience and learnings.
I’m very much thankful to the students and to my cooperating teacher throughout my stay at ESPS.
Farewells are sad but, it also entails a new beginning and another chapter to be unfolded.
Thank you ESPS. Thank you Grade 1 Faith, Hope, Charity, and Sir Christian.
Today, I had a post-conference with Prof. Nina, our Supervisor in practice teaching 2. She told me her feedback on my performance during my final demo teaching and among the feedbacks she said, the one that struck me is this-” You have a good and established rapport with your students”.
I think this comment of hers is the one that I remembered since this comment focuses on the affective part of teaching which reminded me that aside from mastering the content of the subject matter and applying various teaching strategies, the affective part of teaching is sometimes overlooked.
With this, it made me think that even when I was assessing my final demo teaching performance, I focused on the mastery of content, classroom management, and I did not think of my connection and rapport with my students. But still, I’m happy that during my final demo, my good and established connection with my students was one of the strengths of my performance.
For this week, I’m currently focusing on making my E-portfolio. My goal is to really get it done this week so that I can focus on our CBAR next week.
Doing the E-portfolio is challenging since you have to plan what will be the contents of it, I have to look for the files I need to serve as my evidence in the e-portfolio and have to plan out the design and lay out of it. Surely, doing the E-portfolio entails a lot of effort, creativity, and time. I’ll make sure that I will do my best in making my E-portfolio.
