Ensembles

Pleasant Valley High School offers four curricular choirs: Chamber Choir, Treble Choir, Concert Choir, and Pleasant Valley Singers. We also offer three extra-curricular jazz choirs: Leading Tones, Jazz Etc., and Jazz Nouveau. Chamber Choir and the Leading Tones are under the direction of Meg Byrne; Concert Choir and  Jazz Etc. are under the direction of David Baxter; and Catherine Lyon directs Treble Choir, Pleasant Valley Singers, and Jazz Nouveau.

Students in our curricular choirs may participate in 4 main concerts at PVHS per year: The Fall Concert (September/October), the Holiday Concert (December), the District Choral Festival (February), and the Awards Concert (May).  We also host a Spring Recital, which features our small ensembles preparing for State Festival, and the upperclassmen sing at Graduation ceremonies at the end of every year. Outside our building, students may sing at IHSMA festivals, perform at community events, and take a trip every other year.

Students in the PVHS choirs have received many honors and recognition, including consistent Division I ratings, Outstanding Performance awards, placement of students in Opus, ACDA, and All-State Choirs, top placements at national competitions, and singing at Carnegie Hall in 2003. Our Chamber Choir has been selected to represent 4A High School Choirs in the Iowa Choral Showcase.

Our Jazz Choirs perform at the District Choral Festival and Jazz Night at PVHS. Each year, they also participate in festivals around the states of Iowa and Illinois, and work with guest clinicians that are invited to Pleasant Valley. Students in our jazz choirs have long been a part of the Iowa All-State Jazz Choirs and have annually been invited to the Iowa Vocal Jazz Championships.
