PDSA to Support All Students’ Math Achievement -

Part 2: Study and Act

About This Unit:

Units 7 & 8 are designed to guide participants in using the Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle to remove barriers and increase access to math content for our students with disabilities. They are designed to integrate within the “Building Foundational Knowledge” and “Integrating Into Practice” unit so that participants can begin to implement change ideas in a systematic manner. Unit 8 will focus on the “Study” and “Act” elements of the PDSA cycle.

Goals:

At the conclusion of this unit, participants will be able to:

  • Record the results of the plan they implemented from Unit 7, compare what happened with predictions, and record what they learned.

  • Use tools (e.g. Impact-Effect Matrix, Stages of Testing) to consolidate and examine what they have learned from acting on a change idea. Use this information to describe any modifications and/or decisions for the next cycle.

Big Ideas

  • During the Study-Act phases, we will analyze the results of implementing a plan, document our learning, revise theories and determine next steps.

  • PDSA cycles are intended to be run on small, safe to fail scales, meaning that multiple cycles under varying conditions may be needed to determine if a change idea is ready to be implemented on a broader scale or across a system. This style of try and try again is often described as an improvement ramp.
