Schola is a unique high school summer program that affords students an opportunity to grow in friendship, devotion, wisdom, and wonder—through leisure. Participants are invited to slow down, to spend a summer week cultivating the goodness of their souls by reading and discussing classic works of philosophy and literature with friends and having meaningful conversations about the fundamental questions of life.
The City of Shelby will be posting Summer Seasonal Positions with the Shelby Parks and Recreation department in the coming weeks on CivicHR | Applicant Tracking System (civicplushrms.com).
Opportunities will include lifeguards, day camp counselors, maintenance workers, basket room workers, etc.

Join us for an exciting week filled with learning, friendship, and the Clemson experience.
Educational, recreational, and cultural activities allow participants to experience some of the amazing opportunities Clemson University has to offer. Students will engage in hands-on, immersive courses in their field of choice taught by Clemson instructors during the day. Afternoons include free time which can be spent exploring campus, attending a campus tour, or meeting a representative from Admissions or Calhoun Honors College. Evenings feature many of the recreational activities Clemson students enjoy, including bowling at The Underground, swimming at Fike Recreation Center, and a cookout on the beach at beautiful Lake Hartwell. Participants stay in a residence hall and eat meals in a dining hall throughout the week to complete their on-campus experience. Current Clemson students serve as counselors to guide, mentor, and answer questions about life as a Tiger.
Rising 7th-12th grade students up to age 17 will enjoy this one-week introduction to college subjects while being immersed in the culture of Clemson University.
The Foothills Farmers’ Market has some volunteer opportunities each Saturday morning from 8-noon for high school students in need of some volunteer hours! Time slots are flexible--from 1 hour to 4 hours at a time. The market runs year round.

COMPASS is a week-long summer immersion program for high school students and rising college freshmen who would like to explore an academic field of interest through hands-on experiences. Students can choose from a variety of on-campus learning opportunities that best fit with their busy summer schedules. Taught by college-level instructors, COMPASS is a great way to experience live on a college campus and discover a potential career pathway..
Rising freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school and incoming college freshmen who are in good academic standing and have no school suspensions are invited to apply.
COMPASS programs will be available in June. The price is $795 per week. Pricing includes meals, lodging and all scheduled activities. Early bird registration is available at a $200 discount..

Science Academy is an exciting five-day summer camp that equips students interested in science careers. The camp provides numerous hands-on activities in a university laboratory from a variety of scientific disciplines (molecular biology, human physiology, exercise science and forensic science), visits to numerous local science-related businesses (Rutherford Regional Medical Center, Cohesion Phenomics DNA lab and the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Forensics Division) as well as interactions with various university departments (physician assistant, exercise science, university police, and admissions). Students interested in pursuing a degree or career in science are encouraged to apply to this camp.
This camp costs approximately $400 per student, but due to a generous grant from the Stonecutter Foundation, students only pay $50.

Camp is designed for students in grades 7–12. We will start from the beginning, learning the basics of computer science, and then delving into the specifics of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, social networking, mobile networking and big data. The Camp will also cover basic programming using Alice, an innovative 3D programming environment used to create animation, play interactive games, and produce video to be shared on the Web. No computer science experience is required to attend this Camp. The cost covers all materials, a t-shirt, lunch each day, and field trips.
The Camp, valued at $200 per participant, is only $25 per participant thanks to a generous donation by the Stonecutter Foundation.

Lenoir-Rhyne University hosts a Summer Youth Music and Band Camp for middle school and high school students. The band camp is typically scheduled in July, and the Choral Camp is typically scheduled in June. Both camps are housed in the Mauney Music Building, located on the campus of LR.
Campers receive daily instruction during full ensemble rehearsals, supplemented by smaller group sectionals and coachings.
Past camps have offered both day camp and residential camp options. For day camp, daily instruction will run from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. each day, with pick up to occur by 5:30 p.m.

Summer Accelerator is an exciting summer program created by the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics for exceptional rising 5th-12th graders. We introduce students to exciting topics in hopes to encourage their interests in STEM concepts.
Early Accelerator for rising 5th and 6th Graders
Through interactive and hands-on activities, students will embark on a series of STEM adventures. These non-residential, day programs are held on NCSSM's Durham Campus and in Wilson, NC.
Accelerator for rising 7th - 9th Graders
For rising 7th to 9th grade, we introduce students to exciting topics at a critical age for engaging and encouraging their interests in STEM. Courses are each one week-long session that begins on Sunday afternoon and culminates on Friday afternoon at our Durham campus or Brevard, NC.
Accelerator for rising 10th - 12th Graders
Talented rising 10th to 12th grade students choose courses of interest that combine residential, hands-on learning on campus with online education. These courses are conducted over three weeks. The first two weeks of each course take place virtually, at the student's own pace. One week of each course takes place on campus, either in Durham or Brevard, NC.
Now Funded by Summer Accelerator, Step UP to STEM is a free one-week residential course for underrepresented minorities in STEM. It is an innovative interdisciplinary academic program that uses exciting real-world subjects to challenge current 8th graders (rising 9th graders) across North Carolina and build their skills in science, math, and communications. The program is open by application to African American, Hispanic American, and Native American 8th graders who live in North Carolina. Application opens on December 2. Deadline for applications is February 17.

For rising 11th grade African-American, Hispanic-American, and Native American students interested in STEM.
During the FREE one-week residential program, students participate in an inquiry or research experience. Each student is matched with a mentor who facilitates this experience. Outside of working with a mentor, students will also participate in enrichment activities, such as sessions and workshops on leadership competencies, team-building, self-advocacy, communication skills, networking, study skills and growth mindset. On the last day of the program, students will present the results of their inquiry and/or research experiences to their families, the NCSSM-Morganton community and program partners in the greater Morganton community. Deadline for applications is March 10.
What is the Shelton Challenge?
The Red Hat Shelton Challenge is a six-day summer experience for rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors in high school. Shelton’s five cornerstones of values-based leadership—honesty, integrity, compassion, diversity and social responsibility—are the foundations of the camp. The core curriculum focuses on Personal Leadership Assessment and Interpersonal Dynamics, Role of Values and Ethics in Leadership, Leadership Traits and Approaches, Teambuilding and Empowering Others, Social Responsibility, Public Speaking, and Goal Setting.
The First-Year Shelton Challenge seeks youth who are rising 10th through 12th graders with a 3.0 grade point average (unweighted) or higher. Students will get to experience residence hall living, eat meals at a campus dining hall, and use indoor and outdoor recreation facilities. Cost to attend the program is $800.00 for the week.

NC State University offers Emerging Scholars Academy (ESA) and CAMINOS: Your Journey to College pre-college programs. These are for rising high school juniors or seniors. ESA is geared towards students who identify as Black or African-American, while CAMINOS is geared towards students who identify as Hispanic/Latinx. Students who have an interest in either culture are also encouraged to apply.
Our pre-college programs provide an opportunity for students to learn about higher education opportunities and cultural reinforcement. Students will find and build a strong sense of community while also preparing for the college application process and university experience.
CAMINOS will be held June 18 through June 22 while ESA will be held June 25 through July 1. These programs will be in person, and students will stay in residence halls on NC State's campus during their program. It only costs $20 for admitted students to attend.
You are eligible to apply if you have a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.4 or higher or are in the top 15% of their class and are interested in pursuing college. The deadline to apply is Friday, April 7.

North Carolina Renaissance North Carolina Renaissance (NCR) is a pre-college summer enrichment program that enables high-achieving rising juniors from rural communities in North Carolina to experience college life on Carolina‘s historic campus. NCR is a four-day program that will inspire students to pursue their educational aspirations while developing unique leadership skills. Rural counties are designated Tier 1 or Tier 2 by the NC Department of Commerce.
Project Uplift Project Uplift is a summer enrichment and college access program designed to promote and increase access to higher education for all outstanding students, especially those underrepresented in post-secondary education. Every year, during May and June, approximately 1,000 high school seniors participate in Project Uplift sessions. During this day-long experience, Project Uplift participants spend a Saturday on Carolina’s campus, interacting with faculty, staff, and current students, participating in educational, cultural, and social activities. Project Uplift Scholars have the opportunity to immerse themselves in college life and experience the academic rigor and social climate of a four-year institution.
Uplift PLUS This residential program is a 2-week experience held on Carolina’s historic campus. It provides an immersive and engaging experience to prepare the next generation of scholar-leaders. To be eligible for Project Uplift PLUS, students must attend a Project Uplift session.

This fully-funded program gives rising seniors of diverse backgrounds the opportunity to hone their storytelling and writing skills through classroom study, real-world scenarios, and professional mentors.)
Carolina Sports Journalism Camp - The Carolina Sports Journalism Camp is now accepting applications. Rising high school juniors and seniors with an interest in sports and media are encouraged to apply. This camp will include instructional sessions on sports broadcasting, sports writing, sports photography and much, much more.
High school camps introduce campers to academic disciplines and careers that high school curricula may not offer, preparing them for both college and career.

Youth Legislative Assembly (YLA) is a mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, state and national government. The three-day session is patterned after the NC General Assembly. At the conclusion of YLA, a final report is drafted and distributed to the governor and legislators.
The conference allows high school students an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the workings of local, state, and national government. Active participation in YLA increases the students' confidence and ability to debate current issues. Any high school student in good standing at a public, private, charter, or home school in North Carolina is eligible to participate in YLA. Just complete the student application; you do not have to have a member of the NC General Assembly to sponsor you to participate in the Youth Legislative Assembly.

The ACLU National Advocacy Institute’s High School Program - Virtual Program will bring together a diverse group of high school students (ages 15-18) from across the United States to participate in a week-long, firsthand learning experience for the next generation of social justice advocates.
Students engage directly with ACLU lawyers, lobbyists, community activists, and other experts working to defend the civil rights and civil liberties critical to a free and open society. In classroom sessions, lectures, and policy discussions, students will explore the complex nature of issue advocacy, legal strategy, and real world political decision making in Washington, D.C.
The Resource Conservation Workshop is sponsored by the NC Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts in conjunction with the NC Division of Soil and Water Conservation, NC State University Crop and Soil Science Department, and the Soil and Water Conservation Society Hugh Hammond Bennett Chapter.
The Resource Conservation Workshop is a weeklong workshop and involves study and hands on participation in a wide range of conservation topics. Students are housed at NC State University campus dormitories under the guidance of live-in counselors. In order to achieve success, students should come prepared to meet the primary objective of the workshop -- learning about natural resources and their management in today’s global environment. Awards and scholarships can be won and are presented to students under several awards programs.
