Naviance

Naviance is a college and career readiness solution that helps districts and schools align student strengths and interests to postsecondary goals, improving student outcomes and connecting learning to life. At Pinkerton Academy, this tool is utilized by the School Counseling department, Economics teachers, the CTE department, and several others. We all use Naviance in varying capacity, but are all working towards the same goal: to assist students in identifying career pathways that interest them, and finding realistic post-secondary options to pursue those options.

All Freshman students should be activating their Naviance accounts during Freshman seminar. Should they forget their username or password, please contact your student’s School Counselor to have their account reset.

Naviance has a variety of functions, any of which can be utilized by students at any time. The typical recommendation of the School Counseling is for Naviance to be utilized in the following progression:

Senior Year:

  • Conducting research into specific colleges programs, and admissions requirements. The Supermatch feature, located in the Colleges section, is a great place to start.
  • Add in colleges and/or programs that you are applying to into the “Colleges I’m Applying to section”. Be sure to pay attention to the decision type and deadline that you are listing. This is how School Counselors know when to send in your application materials.
  • If your college needs letters of recommendation, request the specific teachers in the “Letters of Recommendation” section under the colleges tab.
  • You can also request that your transcripts be sent to colleges through Naviance. This will tell your Counselor that all your other materials have been submitted and that you are ready to have the last of your materials sent to your college.
  • PA School Counselors do not have access to official SAT scores. If your college requires SAT scores, you are responsible for getting them to your college by the deadline.
  • Consult the Scholarship List on Naviance to see what is applicable to you.

Junior Year:

  • Begin conducting research into specific majors that you are interested in. Find schools that have the program you are interested in, and see if your GPA, SAT scores, and transcript all align with their graduation requirements. You should make sure that your Senior year schedule fulfills these requirements. A great jumping off point for this is the Supermatch feature.
  • If you are struggling to identify and area of interest, you can retake the Career Interest Profiler to begin research career pathways.

Sophomore/Freshman Year:

  • Work to identify areas of career interest. Using the “Explore Careers & Clusters”, “Cluster Finder”, “Career Interest Profiler”, identify potential career pathways to explore. Use these same features to explore colleges that offer majors related to these pathways.
