Freshman Counseling Program
What do Freshman Counselors Offer Students?
Pinkerton Academy has committed four freshman counselors to work with freshman students to support transition to high school. We realize that freshman year is very significant in setting the stage for building success throughout the high school experience. As School Counselors, we focus on the three domains of Academic/Social, College/Career, and Social/Emotional development. Our aim is to be available for all students as we present interventions, strategies, and tools in a strength-based proactive approach.
Presentations: We offer several presentations to students and their families throughout the year. More information to come when the school year gets back underway.
Collaboration: Freshman counselors work closely with the Professional Learning Communities, both teachers and administrators, promoting collaboration that supports students.
Transition to High School and to Upper School Counselors: Freshman counselors also work closely with sending middle schools to strengthen the process of transition from middle school to high school. We meet with middle school teachers to discuss updates and changes to the curriculum so that they are aware when making best course selections and suggestions for students. We collaborate with middle school counselors and go to the sending middle schools to meet with all incoming students and review their course selections with them.
After the freshman year, students will be assigned a counselor who will work with them sophomore through senior year. As part of a cohesive School Counseling Department, we also work closely with sophomore through senior Pinkerton School Counselors supporting freshmen in their transition to upper class status.
