Project Description: For this project, my teammate, Wardin and I, will design a visually appealing cover for a network box in the Computer Lab.
Rules and guidelines:
Communicate with instructor, Ms. Tran.
Create a solution that is visually appealing and covers the network box while having another usage.
Update your portfolio
Brainstorm:
In order to create a visually appealing box for the CS lab, we should first get an idea of what we should create, so we decided to search up some designs on google, for example:
We then decided to mix some concepts we saw and add in a few of our ideas created our own design that seemed to work as well as adding an art piece for the front of the box, to make it look better:
Procedure:
After Brainstorming and coming up with a design, we first took measurements of the network box and increased the measurements by another half an inch so that whoever needs to do something to it can have a comfortable space to do so. We then started to design it using our Fusion 360. Wardin decided to do the design and art piece that goes on the box as well as the access panel door for the front and I decided to make the general design of the box.
After designing the whole thing, we realized that we have made several very big mistakes:
Bodies consisted of multiple sketches making the laser printer confused
The thickness of the box is way to thick.
The original shelf area is way too small and is overall a huge design flaw
So after realizing this, I got help from our teacher Mrs. Tran to help simplify our sketches. After showing how to do it, I did it for the rest of the box and the decoration of the box, making sure to change our box's thickness by 50% as well as making a whole entire new space for a shelf. We finally got an end result that satisfied our plans:
(in case you can't see the design, its a symbol of design and engineering with the words "Design and Engineering")
The next step is prototyping, and after adjusting the length of the walls, our overall prototype was extremely successful, with ALMOST no flaws with our revised design:
Reflections:
S-(strength)- I feel like Wardin and I executed the project/prototype and the steps of designing extremely well, as well as making sure every detail is as perfect as we can make it. I also feel like that we communicated and worked as a team well too.
O-Opportunities to improve- After looking at inspiration from google, we also looked at other teams project so we can get ideas and make our project better. We also learned a lot from our first prototype, looking at mistakes and improving.
U-Understanding- This project, at least for me, forced me to try out new tools for our project when our instructor was busy helping other teams. I got an early test of unfamiliar tools before I learned them from our teacher, which dramatically made me more comfortable using Fusion360. I also learned a lot when our instructor helped us, for example: how to use Laser Printer, how to simplify sketches and unnecessary bodies, etc.
L-Limitations- Though I think we executed this really well, there are some limitations we discovered. Time was one of them. We had to sacrifice a decent amount of detail in order to try to make it before semester 1 grades. We also encountered limitations and had to figure out new tools when there are no instructors to help us.
WISCR-I feel like that the I-Insightful and critical thinkers- as well as the S- Self-Motivated Leaders - really stood out to my team when doing this project as we had to be critical thinkers and figure out ways to get over challenges that came to us. One challenge that we successfully got over was space for bookshelves in our box. We also had to use our critical thinking to figure out the most efficient and less time-consuming way to do our project. For the S, we had to be self-motivated for the constant stress that we were facing and set high standards as we also constantly try and find a way to somehow improve our design.
