Joan Waters

Biography

Joan Waters is originally from England, and grew up on the east coast of the US.. She earned her BFA at MICA, Maryland Institute, College of Art, where she studied painting, drawing and African art. After moving to Phoenix in 1989, Waters had a successful graphic design business, then re-committed to her fine art after having breast cancer.

More recently, Waters began working in welded steel, and has created public art projects for the Cities of Phoenix, Mesa and Chandler. Her work is in many private and public collections including the Phoenix Sheraton, Burton Barr Library, Shemer Art Center, Northern Trust and Ryan House. She recently completed the Desert Landscape Certification program at Desert Botanical Garden with the goal of combining desert plants with her sculptural work. Her sculpture, “Totem: The Plant Princess” was recently installed at the Sunrise Mt. Library in Peoria, Arizona as part of the InFlux Cycle 9. She works at her Tempe studio with her dog (and welding assistant) Billy.
